...Otherwise the TARDIS will be tilted and could be visually distracting.

That never stopped them in the Classic Series. Whether landing in a field or in the middle of the Barnet Bypass, a tilted TARDIS was just part of the norm. Sort of went along with the "battered blue box" premise. (While I noticed the Old Girl tilted, I was never visually distracted by her leaning when the rest of the scene started.)

I think this has actually raised an interesting point. I'd never thought about it before, but I think the tilt is actually why I always imagine the classic TARDISes being more filmsy, "weaker" than the current one. It's not that they're smaller, it's that coupled with the fact that the new ones are big, solid, and a fixed presence wherever they go, and that's been accentuated with the Smith-era boxes with the bigger corner posts and base.
Whilst I don't think a tilted NST would be so much visually distracting, I think it would take away from it's constant and strong presence, and for that reason would be detrimental to the "solid" look of the build that the New Series has always aimed for.
That said, anyone remember "Then Family of Blood" when the 10th Doctor parked the TARDIS on a steep hill, somehow managing to find the one perfectly flat outcrop on a steep slope? I did find that looked very staged and visually distracting, the TARDIS lands where it does, only partially in control of The Doctor who doesn't really know where he's going. Whilst the New Series boxes should have presence, it shouldn't look staged to keep it thus.
Isn't it how ironic that we have to think of solutions out of the box, in order to build our boxes a lot of the time?

Yeah, nowadays it seems like the only time we see the TARDIS tilted or on it's side (like in Eleventh Hour or Journey to the Centre of the Tardis) is when there's a specific story purpose behind it.

But I think some of that also comes from having such a clean, pristine looking prop now. Back when the prop was worn and beat up looking (which I kind of miss, frankly), it probably wouldn't have stood out as much to have it also be tilted a bit on a hill.

It might also be a factor dictated by the prop's construction/assembly requirements.

Anyone else seen this?

PICTURE

Looks like the Capaldi prop has deviated from the method the windows were lit of late, and has gone back to the uniform white glow of most of the Smith era.

PICTURE

This is an interesting one, we can see how the windows on the doors themselves are actually transparent - which I think would be fair evidence to suggest that they're using EL sheet again without the black inserts, although to my eye it looks far brighter than ever before!

EDIT: Sorry guys I just noticed the pictures are under copyright, here's a link to the original site: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2568367/Doctor-Who-star-Peter-Capaldi-smuggles-hot-water-bottle-Jenna-Coleman-struts-black-minidress-patent-heels-set-Wales.html

It definitely looks like the prop is missing the glossy look and dark wood grain of the Smith years. And yeah, those are some really bright windows.

DoctorWho8

I pulled them off so they are easier to see.

Great full front view of the left door detached.  Allows to see what's hidden behind the door jams.

Another good shot of the depth of the doors.

Another musing - looks to me the window bars are deeper too, these look almost deeper than they are wide! Also you can see where they masked off the blue to paint the, white, but experienced paint-bleed, a recurring headache when I did mine!
The trim is clearly that confusing concave sort too, did we ever pin down exactly where that has been used in the past? Was it that it seemed to almost arbitrarily alternate between builds?

They are. There was some discussion of the Capaldi TARDIS' window muntons in another thread (starting here: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=4631.msg56402#msg56402 - excerpt from a quote from Kingpin).

Ah ok, I was aware there was discussion on them being deeper, but I never realised by this much!

Something no one has noticed is that in the pic where the door is being carried, the window is clear!

Do you mean the same pic that I based the reasoning on that they were not using just the EL sheet and have got rid of the black insert?

I see it now.  It didn't make sense to me without the picture.  So you get the first notice then.

Oh I thought you were saying that there was a new sort of window somewhere we've all missed, I was having a right "duh" moment trying to figure out what was going on, for a moment I got hopeful they were opening the windows with a tilt, like the Met Boxes did, which I always though looked really cool, although I don't know how it would translate to the prop. :)
