A few times discussion of the Mike Kelt console has drifted into that of the mystical rehearsal console.

I was under the impression that this rehearsal console was simply an extra set of fibreglass panels drawn from the same mold as the on screen console. No buttons or switches and no rotor.

This was kind of confirmed when former TARDIS boards member Purple Blancmange mentioned he had a number of panels which he was in the process of refurbishing.

Now I picked up the recent DWM special "In the Studio" (mainly for Matt Sanders' article of course!) and found this

taken during rehearsals for The Two Doctors.

As you can see from the pictures, this rehearsal console looks as though it's made very simply from hardboard and some printed controls.

Not sure whether this was a new rehearsal prop or if this is what was always used but it would certainly appear that these aren't the same things PB has in his collection.

I know, it's bugging me too!

Hang about and I'll go and try again

That's done it! Sorry about that viewers :)

This is news to me. I just assumed they would practice round a table or a desk.

Whats also interesting is that it has the edge "arms" from the Hartnell console...

To be fair Cider man, you would have thought it would have been easier to use a table or similar rather than go to the expense of creating this practice console and then have to transport it and set it up for rehearsal.

Until you mentioned it David, I presumed those edge strips were some sort of sticky tape but I've just studied thm some more and they do in fact taper like those arms/fins from the earlier consoles which tape wouldn't really do.

If you look by Pat's leg you can just make out the corner of the wooden table that this 'top' is sat on... and to me those looke like photo blow up images that have been stuck onto an older style console rrehearsal top ;D

A smaller but clearer copy for you:

I suppose it would allow the actors to plan out the controls and their functions but beyond the door control I'm not sure that there really was any attention to continuity with that particular console.

I think the "fins" are just where the pic has been trimmed shorter than what its been stuck to....

I think you are spot on. I've been paying more attention to the "fins" than the shape of the panels. Nice spot.

That must be the hardboard showing through.

Interestingly the photo blow ups (if they are actually photos) appear to have been taken exactly square on which implies the wooded structure it is stuck to is slightly steeper than the actual prop.

Oh yes! How unusual!
