why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

Is this one the Newbery hung with TYJ style doors?

Can't put my finger on what, but something feels different about it.

In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

Indeed it is, if you look at the doors, they're noticeably different than the sides. They're more deeply set, and the stiles are thicker.

Yeah, it took me a moment.  But you're right.

I LOVED the look of this box when it debuted.

I agree.
And that pic of Peter leaning against the old girl is awesome!

I actually have that one signed by Peter himself!  ;D

Happy days!

Russell

I'm trying to work out...how did the TYJ doors fit the aperture of the newbery door way so perfectly when the TYJ doors are/seem to be wider?
From the black and white photos of the newbery at longleat 1983 it can be seen that the TYJ door hinges when onto the posts and the door jams sat on top. Presumably the original newbery doors hinged to the posts in the same way. It looks as though this did indeed narrow a bit of the outer Vertical trim of the TYJ doors when closed but only the same as it did on the original newbery doors.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm creating a 3d print model of the black orchid box and was going to use my newbery files with my TYJ doors but this has thrown up all sorts of questions about whether they'll fit haha

They weren't/aren't the TY-J doors! Nor are they the 'formers' for the TY-J doors.

The TY-J doors recessed panels have bevelled edges - the door panels seen on this version of the Newbery Box seem to have had square edges hence the unique phone "pull to open" sign on this final version of the box.

Ah fantastic! Well that clears that up, cheers Tony, I knew you'd know :)

Forgive my ignorance but what is unique about the sign on this version? It looks almost identical to the sign on the time flight TYJ?E450975A-3AB1-41E2-A8D2-22C1C459325A.jpeg829050D1-6FE3-44FE-9987-5B3E539A8489.jpeg22C898B8-C56D-4CEB-B584-76BC79D99F08.jpeg

Does anyone know why these new doors where fitted? What was wrong with the original doors?

The reason might be because the old doors needed to be replaced. judging by the pictures from the prop's previous use in Logopolis, the doors were in a bad shape, they were bent and didn't close properly.

frax owen

The other possible reason is that they wanted it to match the TYJ more closely?

My memory of going inside this box at Longleat has the doors being made of moulded fibreglass, so not formers as Tony confirms. They were pretty flimsy; no wonder the TYJ warps and wobbles so alarmingly in that behind the scenes footage from Logopolis!

Then again, my memory's generally terrible. Wish I still had the photos I took.
