This control file went to fabrication today!

We're going to do the countersink holes and screws after the fact just to allow for a little leeway or unforseen things at installation/build.

I'll have 8 please :D

Produced in lovely Stainless Steel 316 for maximum corrosion protection, that'll be US $663.61 each.  You want 8, you say? :)

Some footage from the first CNC day:

In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

Really interesting! I was wondering how you CNCed something that big. Answer: really big CNC machine! :)

Incredible Mike!

Would love to see a vid of anything you mange to do with the handle (casting it etc)

mverta

Which handle - the console handle or the exterior door handle?  The console handle is already being machined out of stainless; the exterior door handle will likely have the same thing done as soon as we finalize what sort of sensors are going to be hidden in it.

Excuse my panic as I watched, thinking that thing was MDF and you all weren't wearing respirators at all...

David

mverta

It was MDF and we all weren't wearing respirators at all.  However, the MDF is Medite, which is made without formaldehyde in the adhesive.

Well he's an improvement, for sure :)

While my struggle to find antique glass makers continues, I figured I'd better start getting a resin/acrylic version together.  I've begun my tests by molding an existing, actual pane of glass and will be formulating a correct tinting during the casting phase.  Because I don't have a vacuum de-gasser (yet) the mold has a billion tiny air bubbles in it, but it appears they're not on the surface of the mold, merely in the substrate.  If I like the results of this test, I'll be redoing it anyway in a different silicone than what I used here (just had it lying around the house), but the clear nature of it helps to gauge thickness when pouring the casting material.

First test casting in Crystal Clear 202 urethane resin.

Crude, but this'll work - the micro surface deformations are on the original, and the index of refraction is a surprisingly close match.  I'm going to move to properly molding the panes and working on the color formulation.

Gearing up for the final CNC run...
