Watched the new Timeflight DVD and noticed these odd bolts on the front corner posts.
Anyone any idea what they're for? Never seen them before...

I curse the day that I decided not to buy MkII!!!!

I bet you do!!!  ???

How long ago was it, and what was the asking price?? But more importantly, why were the BBC selling it and why did you say no?!  :o

Never saw those on the video version.  Obviously the box need some extra help in staying together.  You can see what looks like a crack coming down the left corner post.

Ahh the clarity of DVD. I too noticed this straight away upon viewing.
Perhaps Dale or Mr Blamonge (when he returns) would know. They have worked on the box in question. Dale??

From the box I worked on (with much help of course, I'm about as useful as a chocolate teapot...), the rear of the box (which that is, look at the door handle and lock positions) had these odd 1x1 pieces of wood attached to the side posts although screwed not bolted when we had it, and by the time I saw it, those pieces of wood had two piece door/gate hinges on them as well. Given they'd also sawn off the step on the rear, I assume it was to help keep the ailing prop in one piece and to help when parking the prop against a wall  to keep it flush with scenery... however they're just theories.  Purple will know, and will probably enlighten us upon his return...

Dale asked me to look at this thread and so here's what I know.

This is the MkI version of the prop and we are looking at what became the back for the very reason that you have highlighted... Since the end of s18, the corner posts (both of them on the front and rear fascia) began to crack and split from the top downward.  It's a stress fracture caused by the ill fitting roof, made worse when the prop was shifted into position - as the walls flexed against the outer corner of the roof, over time, splits began to appear.

During Time Flight and the surrounding stories, the prop was having some running repairs, both here on the posts (timber was added inside them and bolted from the outside to stop the split travelling further) and also the front and rear sign boxes were replaced with the rebuilt ones from the redressed Newbery box.  Later the sign boxes revert back to the correct versions.

When the second GRP copy came along, as a result of MkI getting quite knackered, this too suffered from the same stresses and the cracks appeared in exactly the same places.  This one also had timber added into the roof and the rear doors, leaving some very prominent bolts showing through!

There you go then.

Thanks Purple, I knew you would know the answer.

How thick is the GRP on those props? 1/8 in.?  1/4 in.?  You would think they'd make thicker or solid corner posts for the second prop to avoid the splitting.

The GRP thickness, is wafer thin, less than 1/8th" - looking at it a few weeks ago, I estimated it to be the thickness of two coatings of Gel and two layers of medium grade matting.  I'm surprised that it's lasted this long.

It's really that thin?  With all the abuse it got, I figured it was a bit thicker, especially for all the door slams.

That's shocking.  Even my TPE is thicker than that.

Nice pictures there.

The thing with this box was that it did have back doors (there's plenty of pictorial evidence to support this), just not when the owner bought it... though I don't know why.  A possibility is that they were either mislaid or broken.  The latter would not come as a surprise if you look at the state of MkII's door hinge returns - pretty much non existant.

EDIT:  Having said the above, I've just noticed that there is a hinge left on the back, so the rear doors probably just went awol prior to the time of purchase.
