From the Brachaki box, via the 30 Years Box (including it's appearance in Goodnight Sweetheart!) to the wierdly odd box used for Tom Baker's "This Is Your Life" and "Heartbeat".

From the new series TARDIS to David Dickinson popping out of the Crich Police Box in Bargain Hunt, via Eamonn Holmes using the old BBC TV centre Box in the lottery...

Where have you spotted a TARDIS?

I don't know if this counts but I spotted this photograph so bought it.

I think its an official BBC picture (on Kodak paper no less!), you can just about make out the location of the picture as being TV Centre forecourt!

This is perhaps one of my favourite props - the second GRP Tom Yardley Jones TARDIS, recast for Trial of a Time Lord... look at the base, much deeper than the original (season 18 version) casting.

Thanks for sharing this picture!

I like the "season18" box, especially late Davison to early C Baker, when it had those "thickened" rims around the signs at the top. I think maybe that the McCoy box was the same with the door details changed, but with the same roof. In "Mark of the Rani" I saw a good close up of the lamp on the roof, the glass was 5" dia, the round plates at the bottom and top were both 8", the top "stack" of the roof was about 40", the lamp sat on a square 8" on each side in the roof centre. For me, the "standard" for TARDIS Box shape is either the late Davison / early C Baker one, or the McCoy one in "Delta and the Bannermen" ;D with it's working phone behind the little door. When I build MY box, I'll have both sets of doors, by simply changing the doors and removing little strips around the sign rims, the Same Box can be displayed as either one. ;)

The season 18 + TARDIS props both came from the same moulds, so the over all structure was identical, it was merely details that changed throughout the years... Part way through season 18, the extended centre door divide was added above the sign lintels, triming around the lintel graphics were removed and so on.

Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy both used these two props, so all the way through their seasons you can play "Spot the TARDIS" prop if you're sad enough, like me.

There's a full history on the Net about all of the TARDIS props, there's a link to it in one of the threads here - though I can't remember where off hand.

Edit:  I'm such a silly bugger, it was in the thread next to this one!  Here's the link anyway:  http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/~trekker/policeboxes/

I've often wondered, but what happened to the door divider under the phone panel? If you look at the photo (and sometimes on screen) you can see where it looks as though its been cracked/broken and then filled with filler or soomething. ???

Yeah, it's a crack - both GRP versions of this prop suffered from being repeatedly built and dismantled, over the years lots of damage like this occured, like in The Two Doctors... filming with the TARDIS out on location in Spain, it was perfect, by the time it got back to the UK for the studio recording, the right handside door, to the right of the window you can clearly see where it was snapped in transit.

I think that exact same spot broke originally in "Planet of Fire."  Notice they come out of the Phone Panel door alot.

That would more than likely be because they're using the other doors at the rear of the box from the photo shown, Bill.

I don't believe so because the middle post is on the signage door, not the right door.

How do I recognise one from the other?
I started drawing my plans for a Tardis/PoliceBox some time ago but the more I researched it,  the less sure of the detail I became. Perhaps the chameleon circuit is not as broken as they'd have us think...

That's the "More than 30 Years in the TARDIS" prop - it did the rounds quite a bit in the 1980s!

I personally like the McCoy "Bannermen" one, although the measurements I have are for the one with the "thick trimmed" signs used from at least "Five Doctors" to "Revelation of the Daleks". I think this was also used in "Arc of Infinity" with the lamp on the roof raised on a cubical post. Maybe I can just change the signs and move the lock and handle positions, prob the same thing.

If you visit THE TARDIS LIBRARY, linked in page one of this thread, you´ll find a detailed history of the various TARDIS props - including the two variants of which you speak, they both were GRP and came out of the same mould and only had superficial changes made to them over the years.
