Just a note to let people know that the topics in the Plans board have been redistributed.

Actual plans topics have been moved to the Tardis Reference section, and distributed amongst the relevant sub-boards there.
There is an index of plans in the http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?board=24.0 itself for easy access.
This will gather the scattered discussions and be more consistent with how console plans are organised.

I'm in the process of organising the reference area to make things more consistent and easy to find.
I realised that people have got used to things being in particular places, and I'm making an effort not to cause more disruption than necessary.

This is a bit of a work in progress at the moment, but I think at the end of it things will be significantly better.
Your patience with the change is appreciated.

The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

Thanks for this Crispin - long overdue and much appreciated!

A quick question regarding the index of currently available plans:

What happens if the plans get revised/updated? For example - for people who follow these things - your plans and my plans for the original Brachacki Box differ very slightly. Whilst I don't think we'll ever agree on the radius of the corner-post quadrants (we're only an eighth of an inch apart which is negligible) I think I may have found the solution to why you think the box was actually rectangular and why I don't; I now think the truth lies somewhere between our respective viewpoints.

So, if I revise my plans, what mechanism exists to update the index and what mechanism exists to draw the reader's attention to what would then be only a very slight divergence of opinions between our respective versions?

Nice! That makes it very easy to see what we've got as reference!

What I've been doing with the index is having a central list of all plans that are considered current or in progress by anyone who wants to participate. Ideally we'll eventually converge, but new people will continue to arrive with new ideas, and I think it's healthy to not get too fixed in our ideas about how the props were. So while we may have more established plans mildly highlighted, I don't want to raise much of a barrier to new people to present alternatives as peers.

At the moment the index is just a table in an article, so will need to be kept current by a member of staff when they notice or are advised, as we do with the other summary topics about top signs, door signs, etc.
Over time I want to extend the topic tagging machinery that we currently have so that people can label topics they start as Plans - then we can build an index automatically. The topic is the finest practical granularity we have for this. Going down to individual posts is too cumbersome. (This is why I've had a preference for specialised topics over time.) At that point the indexing can be automatic, just as it is with builds and prop types, and the staff will not normally need to be involved. Ideally I'd like to see article topics with pages for just the individual plans, as this is easiest to find and refer to.

When I was looking at those high-res images you put up and was posting about the beveled dividers earlier, I checked some other dimensions, and I think I've come to the same conclusion. I now think the box was indeed square in cross section, with the steps under the top signs 36.75" across in all cases (on the original prop). Whether you agree with the specific number or not, we're at least on the same page about the square plan.
I have some other minor adjustments I would make to my plans for the original Brachacki at this point - I think the lower steps under the sign box were slightly narrower, for example - but my build of it is done at this point so I'm probably not going to do more than make occasional suggestions.
Although I'm committed in wood to 7/8" quadrants, my opinion is more flexible, and with good enough evidence I could be convinced they were actually 3/4". Time will tell.

I don't see a problem with having more than one set of plans that are current. I don't think it's likely that we'd have more than 1 or 2 at a time - because most people are happy to accept what is there (or simply don't have the time or analytical ability to figure out more - that's not a dig, we all have different skills).

For example while I might lean towards Tony's plans after reading his calculations and methods, someone else might lean more towards lespaceplie's work for much the same reasons (and that's assuming they don't end up agreeing)....

So yeah. At this stage I don't see alternatives as a bad thing. There's not usually a lot in it anyway. :)

Choice is good! Having alternatives doesn't seem to have been a problem for the PPCB/PTO/SJA signs threads  :)
