Ashes turned out not so good on the test run, just dirty and made the black ink look faded.  I'm going to see what I can do with a black ink pad next.

I used a mix of acrylic artists paint and isopropyl alcohol in a squirt bottle. I also used matt black car spray paint. I'd recommend trying it on an off-cut before using it on your door panel. I should mention that I applied this to the acrylic glass in the panel, not directly to the paper sign. For more detail, look at the Make-Over pages on my website: Relative Dimensions.

I found a good reference site for hinges so you can decide what you need (whether or not you can get it is of coarse a diferent issue).

Here's a basic look at the different arrangements I've seen.

The top one is the met style, you need to ensure hinge is positioned far enough from the wall of the recess that the door can move freely.
