It was a true joy to see a proper police box prop being used again. It's just a shame they won't be using it for the new series.

tony farrell

Yes it was wasn't it!

Spoiler

And here I am stood next to the 'old girl' in the scenery dock at BBC Wales on 23rd June (part way through the filming of the Special). I got to visit the studios and watch the recording as a 'thank you' for some help I gave the Production Team in the making of this episode:

Lovely box! My only minor niggle was a lack of extreme texturing like the original :D
In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

so does the Bradley box have new name now based on the collaborator's?

I think we should call it the Farrell box  :)

To quote Patrick Troughton in The Three Doctors: Oh, no, no, no, no......

I provided my plans for the Tardis interior on which Matt Sanders based his recreated (and, frankly, magnificent) Brachacki set. This is Matt and me discussing the set plans:

It's also true that I provided plans and notes for the 'Bradley' Box exterior as well but, the actual box was built by Simon Nash. He'd started the build initially as something for his own use but was able to use my notes and plans to create a box which better matched the Tardis as it appeared in 1966.

Due to the short notice, whilst Simon was able to complete the box, he couldn't provide the window panes or the lamp. These were created in-house by BBC prop maker Alan Hardy who used the moulds for the window panes provided by Matt from his own Met Box build. As I understand it, it was Matt's decision to have the mix of plain and pebbled glass in all the windows (rather than just in the left-hand side window nearest the front of the box as would have been the case in 1966) and it was also a deliberate decision to have all the top sign-box lettering in white on a dark background (rather than dark lettering on a frosted background as should have been the case for the front and rear elevations of the box).

If people want a fuller account of my (limited) involvement then - subject to Matt's approval - I'm happy to provide one.

As regards naming the box, I'd suggest the "Nash & Sanders Tardis" or (at a pinch) the "Farrell, Nash and Sanders" Tardis - though "Farrell, Nash & Sanders" sounds like the name of a firm of solicitors in a Charles Dickens novel!  :)

Here I am on the Tardis set (I think I look rather at home!):

And here are Matt and me doing our impersonation of Pertwee and Troughton in the Tardis doorway from "The Three Doctors"  :):

Well I am stoked as hell that your work and the work of all those involved resulted in a brilliant recreation.

one small sticking point with me though is that there were multiple opportunities to use my "chameleonic shift" TARDIS different exterior theory,  its brilliant really.

would have been cool...just sayin!!!

Well, you never know who might be reading.   ;)

we could always go with just initials,  such as the FSN TARDIS.  Rather than the  Farrell, Sanders, and Nash attorney's at law TARDIS

That would be an incredible event for me should that ever happen,  time will tell as you say..time will tell.

Makes me think of Crosby, Stills and Nash :D

Don't forget Alan Hardy. This could be the FSHN ("Fashion") TARDIS. (Too corny? :-\)

We could still just use those initials for short as in NFSH, but actually name it the Nash-Farrell-Sanders-Hardy TARDIS: Nash started building it on his own; Tony supplied the plans to make it more accurate; Alan Hardy built the lamp; Matt (Sanders) provided the pebbled glass, or at least the moulds for it. (At least that my reasoning for the order of the names: order of contribution to this magnificent replica of the 1966 TARDIS; only Tony and Matt would know which part - lamp or pebbled glass - came first, and thereby suggest whose name comes third in the line-up of Designers.)

And I know it's been said a dozen times already, but BRAVO ZULU to Tony and Matt for their involvement! (And yes, Tony; you look a little too much at home in there! Got room enough for one more? ;) ;D)

Well I couldn't be more delighted! Until this year I really never thought I'd see the day that a classic TARDIS would return in such a faithful recreation. This is a great Christmas present for us as older fans of the show and of the props in particular.
Huge thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. It really feels like the team in Cardiff (and a few people here :)) just blew us all a huge kiss!
Quite apart from our own delight it will bring the classic era to a whole new generation who might not otherwise see it, and from a prop-builder's perspective that can't be bad!
I do think those props stand up very well in the modern era, and if the new team want to go a bit more retro, I think they needn't hesitate.

"Aw, Brilliant!"

Osric

Given that rather explosive final scene of the Christmas special, is there any hope that 13 will return with the new-old interior and new-old police box next season? I'd hate to see that glorious new set and prop get scrapped so soon!

karsthotep

No hope man..no hope, complete redesign on interior and exterior.  Clean slate as it were.
