I was rewatching The Bells of St. John yesterday, and this seemed like a nice little prop - how hard can it be? ;D

The box itself could easily be made from 1/2" plywood and painted to look like dark oak, with some yellow material for the inside (does anyone happen to know the name for that type of material? I know I've seen it somewhere before, but the name escapes me)

I've seen those boxes before, They are Chinese trinket boxes that you can also put cards in. Probably get at any market place.

Nice find Davros Skaro! That would be a lot easier than trying to build one from scratch. Any ideas on the measurements, so I can try and get one the correct size, or are they all the same?

Wow!! That does look intricate! Nice find on those images - they look spot on to me too.

Unfortunately I can't be of much help as far as advice goes; I'm still in the planning stage as far as this one is concerned - and I've only got to the "build wooden box" stage so far, so I've no idea how to do all those tiny details. ;D

For the wooden box part-- I went to my local craft store (Micheal's) and they has a nice wooden box made of quarter-inch pine with dimensions 6.5" x 4" x 4" for only $3. I took off the top and cut the bottom part into two pieces: one 0.5" tall and the other 2.5" tall to make the total height of the box 3". I have found these dimensions are the best for fitting the bowtie comfortably in the box.

As for the top-- I sculpted one out of clay and cast it from resin, but the mold destroyed my clay original. The resin cast came out with TONS of air bubbles, so it looks like I'll have to make another top to be molded.

Thanks for those measurements idiotwithabox! Those will definitely help with my eventual build.  And that sucks to hear about the clay original being destroyed; I bet it took a long time to sculpt all this tiny details.

They come in different sizes, the one I have (not pictured above) I can put a standard pack of playing cards in & the sides are 12mm thick, so the box is 155L X 103W X 62mm H outside measurements. with height, bottom is 35mm, top 28mm. sorry for the confusion.  :-[

Chris, did you mean to say "130W"? Plugging 13 (mm) into my converter I get .5 inches (.512 actually) - 130 gives me just shy of 5 1/8th inches (that's 5.125 - the converter for 130 gives me 5.118). That fits better with the dimensions (with 160 being 6.3 inches - 6.299 actually, and 60 being 2.362, which is just shy of 2.375, or 2 3/8ths inches).

Thanks for clarifying, Chris. :) That 103 converts to 4.1 inches (4.055).
