After my recent Davros / 6th Doctor encounter - I had a look through Revelation of the Daleks. Found this really cool gizmo.
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

That certainly is a cool-looking gizmo! Thanks for taking the time to grab these screencaps for us, warmcanofcoke, it's really appreciated. :)

The row of switches across the top of the device are square-shaped LED push buttons, similar to these:

And I could be wrong, but above those switches there appears to be a 3-position rocker switch, similar to this one but without any graphics.

(As I said, I could be wrong on this one, it may just be a random detailing, but the shape and the lip around the edge seem to suggest it is a rocker switch.)

There is also what looks like an LCD screen on the bottom of the gizmo - as for that middle part, anyone's guess is as good as mine! ;D

Kind regards, The14thDr

Under those switches, it looks to be a scientific calculator with a piece of plastic over the top

Looking back over those images, I think you're right there. Now you mention it, that definitely does look like a scientific calculator of sorts (now comes the hunt for identifying which brand calculator was used ;))

the box it self, looks like one of those large "Jiffy" boxes. The screws in the corners give that away. Here's a grab of just the box.

It's definitely a rocker switch, 14th. It could be 2- or 3-position as they come in both kinds. (On the prop it could have just been a simple ON/OFF rocker that turned on the battery power to the prop's other lights and buttons.) I've seen these in Radio Shack-type stores, and they do come with no graphics on them - plain black.

(Radio Shack - soon to be a thing of the past the way things are going for it, at least in my area.)

Back in the 80s There were probably 3 sizes of display and the companies were forced to size their product accordingly. So any calculator about that width would probably work.

So the actors were holding the prop upside-down? I love Doctor Who!

A project box, a rocker switch, some light-up push-buttons and a part-disguised digital calculator... Ahhhhh, BBC prop-making at it's best. :)

Well, it's supposed to be an alien device.  And the prop builders at the time had time and budget limitations.  And never thought people would be poring over hi-res images decades later, so what look to be inverted human numbers are almost certainly alien characters. ;)

That still doesn't explain Tom Baker regularly pointing the "bullet" end of the sonic screwdriver at things, but that's another story.

The only thing I would say, is that I don't think the buttons on the prop are momentary because the lights stay on. But the look is spot on! :)

Actually they are latch buttons, because when he started activating the bomb, he tun out the button lights one by one till the final button & BOOM.
