But no doubt it could still benefit from a layer of fibreglass and then it could end up more or less weatherproof - I'll give it a go, just for the experiment. Does one layer of matting followed by a layer of smooth fibreglass cloth seem about right?

This is EXACTLY what I've been envisioning for my build!!!!  Right, it doesn't hold up to exterior knocks etc...but it's very economical & if the surface was treated it might be toughened up enough to be successful.  I thought that this could be great for smaller 3/4 or model builds....but hey, a full size version isn't out of the question.  Has ANYONE tried this material to actually make a build?  I'd be very interested hearing from you  :)
