I've got all the DVD's for every episode, & the "Missing" episodes. But back to the point, I thought this was the Doctor's sonic screwdriver set to detect radiation, I thought he just added the tip, not just a separate tool/prop. I could be wrong though.

I know the modern Sonic has been used as the Plot device, with a setting for every thing [Except Wood]. But the Classic Sonic Screwdriver was more of a tool.

I don't think the device in The Three Doctors is a Sonic. It was never referenced as a sonic in the story. By the same token, I don't think the Door Handle from Inferno is a Sonic.

Frontier in Space Sonic Screwdriver reference to be used in comparison.

HARDY: In there.
DOCTOR: Look
HARDY: In there.
(Hardy bolts the Doctor and Jo into a small metal-lined room.)
JO: Doctor, what's happening on this ship? Are they both mad or am I? First I see a Drashig and
(The Doctor takes out his sonic screwdriver.)
JO: No, you can put that away. Bolts.
...

DOCTOR: There we go.
JO: Doctor, what are you doing?
DOCTOR: I'm reversing the polarity of my ultrasonic screwdriver's power source, thereby converting it into an extremely powerful electromagnet.
JO: Oh. What good will that do?
DOCTOR: You wait and see, Jo.
(The Doctor points the screwdriver out of the door grill. There is a scraping sound.)
JO: Is it working?
DOCTOR: Yes, I think so.

...

JO: How's it going?
DOCTOR: Nearly there. There you are - that's it.
(The Doctor opens the door just as Hardy arrives.)
DOCTOR: Oh, how very embarrassing. Good afternoon.
(Hardy stops the Doctor shutting the door again.)
HARDY: Out.
JO: That's just where we were going.
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.
