The Post at the northeast corner of the grounds of St. Paul's Cathedral, near the site of the old North Gate and just off of Cheapside.

Here's a shot of it from some time between 1965 (when this PA3 Post replaced the original Ambulance Post No. 2) and 1968* (by which time it had been resited) --

(I'll post a better copy of this postcard when I get a chance to scan it.)

It's presence at this location on the 1958-1960 OS map indicates that the original Ambulance Post No. 2 type Post was at the same Site. It was moved, however, by the time the 1967-1968 OS map was prepared, to a Site on the other side of the east arm of St. Paul's Church Yard (the road), at the northern tip of a newly redeveloped block that now held the St. Paul's Cathedral Choir School.

* EDIT: Dating of photo was wrong. Photo actually probably dates from the 1990s - see the following posts for explanation and resulting deductions for likely chain of Resitings.

That picture is not from the 60's I see a proton saga 1985 - 1992 and the volvo is an early 90's model

Hmmm... I wonder why the OS maps have it re-positioned by that time.

Good to know, regardless. Can always count on you, domvar, to help narrow down the dates.  :)

Here are extracts of a couple of the OS maps to show you what I mean (with the dates as per the OS when pointer is centred on the Post):

1958-1960, 1:1250 Scale (Post marked as "PTP" at centre of extract) --

1967-1968, 1:1250 Scale (Post marked as "PTP" at centre of extract) --

Another map at 1:2500 scale and dated as being from 1965-1968 shows the Post still at its original Site, but I had just chalked that up to it probably being in the 1965 portion of the map and either the data used was from just before the move or the OS was being a bit late in updating its position (not an uncommon occurrence). Unfortunately no map at the appropriate scale is listed past the above 1967-1968 map, so can't tell if the above dating is actually correct and the City Police just decided to put the Post back to its original site by the time this c1990s photo was taken.

Right in front of my nose, of course. Looks like we can make sense of it after all.

Looking at the photo vs. the earlier OS maps again, it's right there, sort of (it's complicated). On the surface, the position of the Post in the photo visually looks like its the same as it is in the OS maps, except that it's now around the corner of the fence from where it was in the OS maps. This would suggest a second, later Resite to a position very near to its original Site, but upon closer inspection one can see part of the Choir School buildings within the fence on the left. This means that the fence line and gate to the Statue and Fountain have been moved in the interim, with the old St. Paul's Church Yard roadway now well inside the fence.

Thus, the position of the Post in the photo is very close to where it was Resited to in the late 1960s, it's just that the whole area has been remodeled so that the fence line and gate have been extended to meet it, necessitating a slight Resite of the Post in the process. Examination of current Street Views seems to confirm all of this, with the final position being on the south side of Paternoster Row (which was originally well north of both earlier Post Sites), and just west of New Change.

Regardless, it appears that the above photo is actually of the Post at Site 3 rather than Site 1, with the original OS dating of a late 1960s move remaining intact.
