There was no phone seen in the TARDIS until 1980 Logopolis. At that stage we see it in the refurbished Newbery TARDIS (1976-79).

There's also one seen in the Tom Yardley-Jones TARDIS in 1987, in Delta and the Bananamen, In this case it's not the TARDIS but is meant to be a police box in the 50's.

Well, at least now we have a reference image for the Classic Series Police Box phone: had a dial. Too bad we don't have a good image of the dial's center label for it as well. (Or does someone?)

CAVEAT: Remember, in "Logopolis" that phone was also supposed to have been the phone from a "real" Police Box like the one from "Delta and the Bananamen" (good one!); it was not a TARDIS phone when the policeman picked it up. It wasn't until after the Master materialized his TARDIS around that Police Box - and disguised his TARDIS as the Police Box to trap the Doctor - that this phone started being thought of as a "TARDIS" phone.

So on the whole this one could go both ways: one can just as correctly say that in the Classic Series, the Doctor's TARDIS proper never really had a phone (that is, we never saw the TARDIS' phone), as one could say that the TARDIS' phone was only seen in "Logopolis" (which would make the TARDIS prop used with the phone - technically - a 'Yardley-Jones' as even though the phone is in the 'Newbery', the Newbery had been refurbed to appear as though it was a Yardley-Jones clone).

I guess it just depends on what level of accuracy you're aiming for.

The Newberry box just had TYJ doors hung on it. But looking at that grab from Logopolis I'm not sure it had happened yet.

The side walls look like they have the same height panels.
