Okay! Now for the hundred-thousand light-year question... if you could make another one if these and soak it in a large above-ground pool overnight, would it swell to reach the actual set's size (and stay that way)?

Because if it can, I really want one!

I certainly think this deserves a touch of Envy(tiny).jpg

When do you think you could mass-market this? ;)

*sigh* want....!

... would be a nice idea! Hell, if I could do that, b****r making only models; I could make a fortune on life-sized ones! A few problems present themselves however:

1) Once it soaked in all the water, it would weigh-in at more than several metric tonnes. The console plinth itself would be impossible to move without a forklift and / or crane!

2) The structures would be more water than anything else. They wouldn't be able to hold their shape very well, and everything would constantly be falling apart. Or over. Or both. And both of these things mean that...

3) You would have to KEEP it in the pool.

4) Relatively minor considering the other problems: you'd never be able to run electrics/electronics through it!

... joking aside, thanks again for the kind words Dino. I am REALLY happy with the way this has turned out (Actually, all my console rooms to date), and the nice things people say make me keen to keep going. Needing something a little more challenging at this stage though, I'm considering turning my hand to the '96 movie console room...  ;)

I went and had a look at some of your virtual builds expendable, and truth be told, you REALLY don't need me to make these for you, you pretty much already have all the requisite skills to make your own! 3D printers aren't *cheap*, at least not CHEAP cheap, but they're not that expensive either. You could easily turn your models into printable build files (Sketchup HAS an STL export feature, which is a stereo lithography file and they are used PRECISELY for 3D printing) and produce fantastic consoles from what you have already modelled. I was really quite surprised that you could produce such detailed and accurate work with Sketchup to be honest; I've used it a few times but found it a bit lacking for my taste, but that's clearly not the case for you. If you wanted to try your hand at using something like Solidworks, you would have no problem whatsoever!

I know you're joking, but truthfully mass marketing isn't an option for 3D printing; it is, by definition, not a mass-production tool, although some companies are getting close to production quality and speeds. It really though only lends itself to parts that aren't manufacturable by traditional means, or for rapid prototyping / 1-off model making. I wish I had the tools for mass production! Turning the idea into the actual thing would be quick and easy, not weeks and weeks...! ;)

Anyway, I *wanted* too... that's why I got the printer! ;) I appreciate the sentiment though...

Cheers.

Well then... don't need to go any further to be the ultimate "wet" blanket! ;)

(I hate it when someone finds a plan in my flaws.)

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I was thinking more like making molds of the parts for resin casting, but that would go against site policies.

Any plans to share the STL files for producing your wonderful console rooms?  Either on here or on somewhere like Thingiverse?  The couple on Thingiverse at the moment do not come close to the quality and accuracy of yours!

The files would have to be shared on a place like Thingverse, Dropbox, etc., as the Forum doesn't support STL file types (or PDFs, or BMPs). However, posting a link to a file hosting site like those would work if those files were made available. Then all a member would need to do is click on the link to get to the file.

@galacticprobe: I do hope he does share them as I would so love to have a go at printing them!

@d33j r093r5: Ca I ask what brand and colour filament you settled on in the end for the grey walls?  There are so many variations between brands and even within a single one!

Hey fictionlord, I've seen a few of the consoles on Thingiverse, some others on Yeggi, and a few others on other similar sites. One of the reasons why I modelled my own is I wasn't happy with the quality of what I found there, with one exception on Yeggi, and the gentleman in question who produced it is actually a member of this forum! :) But ultimately, I knew I wouldn't be happy with the end result unless I made it myself. I think most people feel the same way... ;)

With regard to filaments, there are a wiiiiiide variety. Most of my colours come out of China, from a company called Wanhao. I order them through Aliexpress. And the only reason for that is because it's dirt cheap!  ;D However, there ARE other specialty colours that I have to go further afield for because either Wanhao doesn't make them, or they just are REALLY highly specialised. As an example, the pastel green I printed my Time Monster console in came from the U.S., and only one company makes the colour as a special range. Paid the Earth for it too, not to mention shipping! But it was worth it for me. I don't paint and I don't do post cleanup work, I like to model, print, and assemble. If you can be bothered to do all the finishing work, i think it would work out a lot cheaper, as you can buy any old plain filament, print the shapes, sand, paint, and you're good! :)

I also buy other colours from a local seller online here in Australia. They have the bulk of the remainder of the colours I need (like the various greys I used, particularly in the 80's Console room and this one) and because they're here in Australia (where I obviously am) the shipping is next to nothing, which is a big determining factor as to where I buy my filament from. And the colours I select aren't exact, I go with a "best fit" criteria when selecting. Ultimately I think they're good enough for me... :)

In any case, thank you very much for the kind words, they're very much appreciated. :)
