Went on a video capture spree to examine the Diamond Pattern on the console panels.

why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

Interesting pattern. Looking at it (lightened and sharpened a little)...
DiamondPat-original.jpg
...it looks like some of the diamond point strips meet at the "point" (yellow arrows), while others meet on the "sides" (red arrows).

I wish Baker's hand wasn't blocking the rest of that panel; it would be great to see how the rest of those strips meet. (Of course, they could also just be scribe lines to give it the look of individual strips. Having so little, or no, documentation on this console means we'll never really know which.)

I too wish Tom's hand wasn't there ....
So you think the lines look like this?

Oh that's very good.... The question is, of course, whether or not to replicate that... I reckon they probably did it to save on awkward cuts...

What was that Scotty said in "ST: III" - something about over-thinking the plumbing?

Personally? I think the panel cover with 7 strips looks a bit overcrowded; the one with only 6 looks better. Also there's that Time Lord "Power of 6"; the consoles have 6 sides (even the 2005 console had 6 panels - the Rani's console not withstanding); many of the Gallifreyan symbology have six-sided designs to them; ergo, the panel covers make sense to have 6 "strips" in the diamond pattern. (Besides, it's an even number, and they can be easier to work with most of the time.)
