I built myself a sonic screwdriver.  It wasn't terrible.  But then the emitter fell off and got lost* and that was the hardest part to build.  At that point I said "you know what?  The Character Options sonics are pretty nice" and bought one.  I did paint it to make it more screen accurate, but I've been very happy with "cheating" and not doing the whole thing myself. 

*Months later, against all odds, I did find the emitter back, laying in the grass in my backyard.
