I promised Dino research and research he shall have!

From 'The Dead Planet':

Beautiful grabs, Tony! (The Evil One is behind me on her laptop at the moment and says "Hi!") Where did you find those images? I love that extreme close-up of the secondary levers on Panel 6; it not only shows the asymmetry of the levers, but it also has a good showing for the placement of one of the silver handles, and the remnants of that red-painted center of the Demat Lever's knob. (I wonder how long it took for that paint to start wearing off?)

Nice line-up of those silver handles on that panel's drawing, with the perspective lines. Can't argue with that. As for those "ping-pong ball lights"? Well... not really sure what name to give them (other than ping-pong ball lights). Maybe "indicator ball-light housings"?

And I'm still on the hunt for a better image of that "inverted T" control, hoping to find an early Hartnell era image that shows exactly what was there. I know pieces of that control started disappearing as the Hartnell years wore on - by the time of "The Space Museum" the vertical line had already gone, and the knob had shrunk to a really small one, and by the time of the Troughton era all of the lines making up that "inverted T" were completely gone. (That knob was still the really small one.) But as this is supposed to be the earliest of the Hartnell console years, I'm hoping for an image from one of the first few stories.

And this is the best I've been able to come up with, not having my "The Beginnings" DVDs at hand:
InvertedTcontrol.jpg
It's really just a larger image of the one above. (Can't remember where I found it - been all over the Whoniverse looking for a good shot of this panel.) But after some tweaking to sharpen the image a little, I think you might be right, Tony. Looking at that "Inverted T" control closely, I think I see a gap between (what would now be) the "Backwards L" lines and that knob, and the "line" on the other side of that knob isn't as dark as the backwards L, which could very well mean it is the shadow of the knob. So it looks like your diagram is right after all, unless someone can get a better screen grab of that control on that panel to prove otherwise.

Good eyes on that. (Just proves that my stanky old wizzard eyes are getting older... and stankier!)

Another point is that on panel three, I've always thought that the two vertical speaker grills were made of ridged rubber matting.

We had lots of the stuff when I worked at the BBC and in fact, in the checking area, we used it to cover our work desks.

I'm also fairly sure that when they were removed, you could see the glue where they were attached.... :)

Yes Marc, I too thought they were ribbed but couldn't get a decent screen grab so, went with speaker mesh:

Like the ball caps on the secondary levers (which had begun to fall off as early as The Dead Planet), these grilles had disappeared by the start of the second season:

The srcew holes are just visible:

If they were screwed on items, I wonder why they removed them?

I know the console lost one of the small levers to the Space-Time Visualiser during The chase.... But I can't think of anything that got any new speaker grills (apart from the Masters' TARDIS in The Time Monster, some years later...).

Edit: oh and it would be really cool to have the width of the bottom edge of the panels (which is the same as the back edge of the fascia) and the thickness of the fascia ;) Thank you :)

Edit 2: As for the rubber/ speaker thing...

Here is a grab from the pilot, there isn't a similar closeup-shot in the transmitted version.... And they have moved by that point. But here...

I'll keep looking though :)

One more grab... I can't seem to see screws in them... I think it's a bit of rubber left behind where they were removed. But also,
there's a reflection from the ping-pong lamp... I think that speaker grill-cloth wouldn't do that :)

I got as far as The Rescue... That's when they vanish completely.

I took almost the same grab yesterday. But for different reasons. I think the meter says Oxygen :)

Thanks Silverfox (and Marc) - I think it's great that people are willing to pool their knowledge. On the basis that the ribbed matting had been used (albeit on a different panel) for the Pilot Episode and the catching of the light, I'm tempted to go with Marc - unless anyone has a high definition version of the rehearsal shot of William Hartnell I posted earlier in this thread (it's a well-known photo, there must be a full-size version somewhere)!

Specific to the screen grab from episode 1 of the Sensorites, I'm sorry but I'm not sure..... I think what we're seeing is the merging/overlap of shadows and that the small bakelite knob is mounted on a (slightly) smaller circular plate. Have a look and see what you think:

Very tricky to see there  (on the Sensorites grab).

Slight side note. I think it's Interesting to note the pencil(?)  lines that are there, I would suspect they  come from the pilot version of the panel :)

I'm surprised no one lightened up the pic to see what's there. ;)

Looks like the horizontal strip extends just past the vertical strip and almost touches the base of the knob.

Only because you beat me to it, Bill! :D But, taking it one step further...
InvertedT.jpg
...lightened and sharpened.

Taking into account the location of the light source by using shadow placement (falling towards about the "6:30" position or so), if there was a gap between the horizontal line and the knob we would see it. So I think you've got it right, Bill; that strip does "overshoot" the vertical strip, and does touch the base (that dark disc that Tony noticed) under the knob.

So in a really rough sketch of this control, it looks like we'd have something like this:

      |
     |
-----O
(and if I could draw a larger "O" over the one I've got here - this "O" being the knob's base, I think we'd have the layout of that control). The only problem is that we can't see on the other side of that knob in this image, but considering that we do have a disc-shaped base under that knob, my guess is that the horizontal line ends at that disc, and the knob's diameter just happens to be so close to the length of the horizontal strip that between the two (the strip and the location of the knob and its base), it could easily make one think those strips were in an inverted T configuration, when it's actually more of a "backwards L" - with a small serif "tail" on the L - and it joins the knob's disc base. (Possible?)

Oh, and while I was at it, just for giggles, I took a closer look at that meter in question...
OxygenMeter.jpg
...and the label does indeed say "OXYGEN". Enlarging it only pixelates the lettering, but from the original size of the image, from what I can "guess" of the font is that it is the same "Keep Calm" that was used on the TARDIS' top signs. (And as always, should any of my brain cells be caught or killed, the Secretary... oh, wait... jumping time tracks again. <AHEM!> And as always, should anyone find me wrong in any of my guesses, please correct me.)

On the subject of the meters, how many do we know the correct labels for now?

Oxygen, Pressure....

Was there one with POWER on it too? (Can't recall).

celation

"WATER VAPOUR".

The fourth dial is still a mystery...

With RADIATION; PRESSURE; WATER VAPOUR; and OXYGEN known - they all seem to refer to external atmosphere measurements. The only obvious one missing is "temperature" but there are no clear views of this meter that I've seen (between RADIATION and PRESSURE if I remember rightly). I guessed at "temperature", so that's what my meter reads.

Interesting the little "pencil line" gradations on that horizontal black bar. Hadn't seen that before.

Lovely job with the plans Tony. Sorry - must get you my measurements for the Radiation meter at some point... Though it looks like maybe you don't need them!

Hi chaps - changes made:

Marc - rubber matting incorporated (I have retained screw fixings as I think the little holes I identified are just too evenly spaced to be torn bits of matting). Also the extra dimensions have been added to distinguish the fascia and panel widths.
Dino, Silverfox, Bill - have adjusted the length of the horizontal leg of the reversed L shape and have added the six graduation marks to it.
Chris - please continue to contribute whatever you see fit.
