Unless its in here somewhere and I just can't find it, I noticed we haven't got a reference post for the lovely console and console room that is from the Superannuation Services TV ads featuring Tom Baker. I'm putting in Other Reference because we don't have a Other Console section, so here goes:

In the studio:

Ready for shooting:

Tom at the controls, receiving direction - yearh right!

Those pictures stolen from: http://doctorwho.org.nz/archive/tsv50/tardisondisplay.html

And pictures of how it appeared onscreen (apologies for low quality, this is the best source I've found):

And just when you think you're done, you find a few more:

Wow. I never knew this console existed. I guess we never got this shown on any US tv station. And I see they only put controls on three of the panels; the back three are blank. I guess from what they had planned for this console and the filming that they knew those three panels would never been really seen on camera much, and decided to save some money (and probably time - which is also money).

Rather than having this under the Other Prop Reference board, this one should probably go under here, http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?board=26.0. And while there are no links to them on the Main Page under this section, in the Console Reference board we do have references for the Rani's console, the Junk Console (under http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=2813.0, John Hurt's console, the "Scream of the Shalka" console, and several others. So this topic would fit perfectly under the Console Reference board. (Maybe one of the Mods could relocate it?)

Nice references. Thanks for sharing, David!

Love this! There was a post from another member. He asked if there were any photos of it and posted the video link and I looked it up and found 3 of the photos you posted here and replied to his post with them. I just checked and it seems the post has been deleted as I can't find it and it is not showing up in my posts on my profile. But most excellent photos! I think I will try building this one as my first console with a few tweaks! :)

If that other post was in the "Off-Topic" section, then it was auto-deleted after six months. The Off-Topic section does that to keep things from piling up in there, especially since they are, after all, "Off Topic". I'm not sure that is where that post was, just guessing as to how it may have vanished.

I don't know whether this deserves it's own topic, but I found this photo of the NZ retirement savings sonic screwdriver when I was looking for references to make my own copy.

It appears to be a gas cylinder with a loop rod end on the shaft and some sort of knurled piece (car clutch alignment tool?) attached to the bottom. Probably all painted black or a gunmetal grey.

In the episode, it does a green laser ray effect on the console door, and has grey/blue sparks circling around the head in the closeup.

Thanks for posting that Brian! That's actually a really great design for a sonic device - the "sonic junkie" in me is just screaming for a replica to be made. ;D

This looks like all of the variations of those adverts:

Direct link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEgRW-7dcsI.

The entire vid is just under three minutes, and it has several adverts in it running back to back. Maybe it's my stanky old wizzard eyes, but it looks like that loop at the end (what looks like a bubble-blowing wand) is a lighter grey than the rest of the body. There seems to be a distinct line where the color changes. (If it was just the blue sparklies around the loop end, I would think that line at the color difference wouldn't be to well-defined; but I could be wrong since the video quality isn't the best.)

Anyway, I thought everyone would enjoy watching these. It's also amazing how easily Tom Baker slips back into "Doctor" mode after having been away from the role for so long when these were filmed.

I was lucky enough to meet up with Tom Spilsbury (current Editor of DWM) last Friday; he remarked that when he last interviewed Tom Baker he (Baker) had become indistinguishable from the character of the Doctor! Apparently the current Mrs Baker simply rolled her eyes at the tall tales her husband recounted.

I was also privileged to meet Tom Baker a few years back (I know, I know, I'm a terrible name-dropper  ;) ) and he really is one of life's great eccentrics!

(Edited to clarify which Tom is which.)

I think some of us have dropped a few names at times, Tony, but when you get a name as prestigious as this you go right ahead and drop away! I've never had the good fortune to meet Tom Baker, and I probably never will get the chance now. I don't think he travels to the US for conventions anymore, and with my back's condition not taking well to plane flights (or rolling decks of cruise ships), it looks like I won't be getting across the pond anytime soon. So all of your other great achievements aside (those magnificent drawings, the in-depth research, building that amazing "Pertwee" central column, etc.), I've got to give you one of these for meeting Tom Baker:
Envy(medium-small).jpg

So you go right ahead and keep dropping those names, my friend!

Thanks for posting those video clips guys- I didn't even know they existed!
Great to see Tom in action again... Although I would be happy just watching him recite his shopping list!

I met the great man once at a show in Birmingham. Stood in line for ages to get his autograph. Well worth the wait- he was a perfect gent!
The late great Brig, Nicholas Courtney was sat next to him.
I couldn't afford both autographs, so I got Tom's, then shuffled along & stood staring star-struck at Nick. He obviously thought I wanted his autograph too, so he reached for a photo & a pen.
I said, "Oh, Sorry, I can't afford your autograph as well!"
He huffed & rolled his eyes exactly the way he did as the Brig when he got exasperated with the Doctor!
I was so amazed I didn't even feel embarrassed!
(I also saw the wonderful Liz Sladen at the same show. She complimented me on my Dr Who scarf- fanboy heaven!)

Right, that's enough name dropping for one day!

Russell

Tom slips into the role so easily! You will never beat the classic console room look.

Cardinal Hordriss

Maybe I'm old fashioned but seeing Doctor Who used for tawdry advertising purposes makes me uncomfortable.
I speak to you from the final days of Gallifrey. I am the past you have forgotten. You are the future I will not live to see...

KIT-KAT

Heh, I can understand. I kinda like it, I don't take it too seriously
