casting is a good way to go. especially since the real deal is pretty hard to come by. good luck and take lots of photos of the progress

Quote from: deck5 on Aug 28, 2009, 04:39 amAnd tell me, do the bumps face outward or inward, on the box?

Going through a bunch of pictures, I see some where the bumps are facing out and some where the bumps are facing in.

Personally, I think they should be facing in and that's due to how they're installed.  When you're installing window glass, you put some glazing putty in the frame, press the glass into the glazing putty, put in glazing points to keep the glass from coming out, adding more glazing putty and then clean up the excess putty.

If you have the bumps facing the outside, you'll have to initially put more glazing putty on the frame and when you press the glass into it, excess glazing putty will be squeezed into the cracks between the bumps.  When you try to clean this up, it will be time consuming to get a nice looking line of putty.

If you have the bumps facing in, you can easily get the outside line of putty looking straight.  On the inside, you don't need the putty to extend even as far as the edge of the frame, so if your line isn't as smooth it won't be as noticeable (and not at all from the outside).

Of course what makes the most sense of all, is to just do what looks good to you.

I think when I visited one of the real police boxes, I saw some panes with the bumps inward, some with the bumps outward. That was most likely a recent unintended change, though, and I dare say Colin is right about standard glazing procedure. For the record, my TARDIS has the bumps outward for decoration, but then it's an indoor box...

Crich has a mixture of inward and outward facing pebbles, as has Avoncroft. I thought the inward facing pebbled windows looked "older" ie original, maybe.

It's hard not to be pleased about this item I just acquired:

lantern.jpg

Three verticals.  6" wide; the lamp part (excluding the feet below) is almost 6" tall.  Thick fresnel glass, slightly yellowed.  Heavy!

That is AWESOME! With that original fresnel, which even has a housing that probably won't require much (if any) modding, and that original pebbled glass, you've found the two TARDIS builders' holy grails.

I daresay I may even use the lantern unpainted; I'm not sure I can bring myself to paint over the beautiful patina it has!

I appreciate the detailed analysis, Colin!  Thank you.

I'm finding it hard to tell, particularly with some of the older pictures, which way the pebbles face.  I'll have to see how my castings look from either side, and make a choice from that.

hello deck 5, i casted some of my pebble panels the mould held the detail but over time the glass con-caved a little on the flat side.... don't know if i mixed up the casting resin wrong or if the kind i used is prone to things like that. love the lamp and the housing, they may have used somthing like that on the newbury box but painted white.....(i think). looking forward to your build your off to a great start

Unfortunately, they don't sell to individuals. It's that outside case you found that comes with it that really blows my mind. Great catch!

I'm quite pleased with it myself!  It came to me via a friend who collects nautical antiques.  Not a hobby I have much to do with, save for this one item :)

Thanks!  Hoping my castings don't warp.  I may go with a tougher resin for the purpose, or maybe glue the castings to thin plexiglas.
