Apparently the tours will be ending on the 25th of this month, so whether we see many more galleries will remain to be seen.

Well apparently the tours are sold out too! I have to say personally it didn't seem well communicated. We knew the tours were going to happen, but the website was quite slow updating :( :(

Hope we get to see more great pics soon though!

Hopefully they'll continue to conduct tours off-and on during the down time between series, that would be nice.

I just noticed this particular symbol is on the whirligig at two different angles. Here on the top tier at one angle, and again on the bottom tier rotated 180 degrees from that on top. (It's not flipped or mirror image; if you look at its pattern you can see it's actually been rotated.)
WhirligigSymbol.jpg
This could open up a can of worms. How many of the symbols have been rotated - or mirrored/flipped - on each tier, or is this the only one to have been given that treatment? There may be only 18 symbols, but at least one of them is being used at a different angle (sort of making it a "19th" symbol?).

Maybe they just put that one in upside down by mistake...

Or they were short one and decided to rotate a complicated one.

Good point, Marc. Looking at the symbols that flank this one, they're all oriented the same on both tiers. And other symbols that you can see on all three tiers - which show the repeating pattern - are oriented the same way on all three tiers. This one is the only one that's "upside-down" on one of these.

So... I glanced back through the doctor who2's earlier post with all of those great images and I spied this:
DW710HD_1206.jpg
That same symbol on the middle tier, and it's oriented the same way as the one on the top tier! So I think you may be right; the one on the bottom tier may have just been placed upside-down. Mystery solved? (And they'd have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't been for those meddling TARDIS Builders kids! ;D)

Hello all,

This is a silly point, and I hope I don't make anyone mad by raising it... just the mood I am in, but it occurs to me that there are symbols we use all the time that are still valid (if different symbols) when rotated.  A figure 8 on its side is infinity a + tilted is a X, NOON upside down is NOON, and ood upside down is poo....
it maybe the same symbol upside down, but that does not necessarily make it a mistake....

just my thinking.

Cheers

M.D., I think Marc's reasoning behind that symbol being put on upside-down by mistake is based on the fact that out of the 18 symbols used, with their pattern repeated exactly on each of the three tiers, this is the only symbol to have a different orientation, and it's only on that bottom tier. It may have indeed been intentional, but then one would think that they'd have changed the orientation of some of the other symbols as well so as to not have such a recognizably repeating pattern. (But I guess Mr. Pickwoad would be the only one to really know the answer to that question. If asked, he could look up at the whirligig and say "Oh yeah... we did that just to see if anyone would notice it"; or, he could say "Oh, bugger! They did put that one upside-down!")

Awww, That makes sense.  Sorry, I need to always read the thread completely before responding. Good point Dino.

Sorry to interrupt...carry on

No need to be sorry, M.D. Your comments provided some good thought-provoking input, and gave me cause to exercise my little green cells as I sought a plausible answer to why that symbol was the only differently oriented one. If Marc, and then you, hadn't given your input, then I never would have thought so much (or anymore) about it.

Input is great. It leads to thought and further discussion, and sometimes that leads to solutions (not always, but sometimes). In this case, we're still sort of left wondering, but at least we have a plausible answer to that one symbol being upside-down.

Keep the comments coming! (The way my meds have been hitting me lately, I look forward to this sort of discussion because it does make my brain work... occasionally it makes my brain hurt, but usually just work, which keeps me from getting stupider than The Evil One says I am already! ;D)

Marc posted a link to a pretty cool discovery here:

-from that, we've now got this:

Excellent images of all 18 symbols on the whirligig, Kingpin (and Marc for posting that link)! (If anyone is building all three tiers if this thing, just don't forget to mount this symbol upside-down on the bottom tier.)

OMG! You guys have been really busy.
I apologies for not having much input on here but things have been very hectic and certain jobs have been put on the bottom of the pile. But i'm back now, determined to get these symbols finished. Thanks for all the useful tips on what to change on the symbols,
I've had a good look on the site Kiwidoc found, Rubbertoe Replicas. its a shame the designs aren't available in a larger size, would come in handy but in the gallery they do have these images as a edition to the picture he provides;

Rubbertoe Replicas has released a (lovely) new set of coasters and the text includes a description of Nick looking at the 18 new gallifreyan symbols designed for the new console room and picking his favourites.  And guess what he provides...

even a clock. Again a shame there isn't all of them on there.

I've also decided i'm not happy with the first batch of symbols i did, they all have flaws on them in some way or another so i've decided, and i don't know why, to completely make these symbols from scratch again using all the images you lot have provided. And the improvements made galacticprobe and Doctorwho8 (many thanks)
I've done two now which look a lot better than the originals;

No need to apologise. We all know how life gets in the way (usually at the most inopportune moments). We're just glad to be of service with helping sort out the details so you are able to refine your drawings.

A few things I noticed about the above symbol:

The small circle embedded in the rings around the rim a around the 5 'o clock mark: There should be a gap between the outside of the embedded circle and the innermost ring of the overall design.  The ring within this small circle should probably be a little larger, and a little thicker.

The small circle above the slanted line that's straddling the innermost ring of the overall design, it looks like it might need shifting a little bit so that the middle of the small circle would be bisected by the larger ring.
