Wow! That sonic has some serious history behind its development. Too bad they didn't give him enough time to at least solve the durability issues. I liked the 2-inch extending version (with the copper band in the middle of the "hidden" green section) better than the 1-inch extending version. It just looked like it had more capabilities than the 1-inch version - more "information readout" or whatever it was that the Doctor used to see when he looked into it after buzzing something and then flicking it open for a look.

Fixed the link issue, It is really interesting to read. Apparently, you can buy the 11th/12th's Sonic screwdriver prop. If you have £700 lying around that is.

I just looked at the picture and noticed how easy it would be to make a toy version of this using the Character Option's toy, buy a cane, attack the top of the sonic to it and then customize the top with a small plastic ball, cut it into four and glue it to the ends of the sonic. You might need to get a hard plastic ball though, which at that size would be very hard to get.

Not as hard as you might think. They are available at craft stores - especially at this time of year - because people turn them into Christmas tree ornaments. They have them in different sizes, some as large as 4 inches in diameter. They are clear, and they come in two halves that snap together. You could use the two parts of the balls that don't lock together (so it doesn't jam when closed). Those would be easy to cut: lay the hemi flat and just cut it down the center without having it slip or roll.

Then, once the pieces are cut and after gluing those pieces to the CO toy, you can paint the silver on the inside of the cane's knob bits so you don't have to worry about the silver getting scratched or rubbing off. Granted, those plastic ball halves aren't all that thick, but they would work for the purpose.

Thought these may come in handy, only a few, but it shows you how big it is in comparison to the rest of the sonics and also you can see how far down the momentary switch is....

I just found these in my images folder (where they came from before that I have no idea )

Here's the BBC concept art. It looks like they planned on making the silver ball much more shiny and reflective (metal, perhaps?)

Judging by photos of Matt Smith holding the cane, I'm guessing that the "cane" part is somewhere in the region of 3 feet in length, so does anyone have any ideas on the diameter of this prop?

Nice bunch of photos there of the original prop BioDoctor 900 & The14thDr.
Looks like it's made from solid aluminum, looking at the bottom end & Matt being: Height    5' 11½" (1.82 m) about 3' (1 meter) sounds/looks about right & I guesstimate about 30mm - 35mm dia. approx.

But then with my bad eyes I could be way out.
