I think you got it right first time, nacholibre. (Can I call you nacho?) From what I've noticed, at least, each half of that Mat/Demat Lever is connected to one of the lights, so they do operate independently (and not a faulty bulb or connection).

I thought there was some discussion about that on here, but naturally because I'm looking for it, I can't find it!

The Mat/Demat Lever on the current (2013) console was a custom-built component, and as we've seen it was built so both levers could operate independently. The two previous consoles (2005 and 2010) did use throttles, with the 2010 console being loaded with them. The large Mat/Demat Lever on that console originally started out with two separate levers (it was a boat/ship throttle, presumable one from a twin screw ship so the screws could be run at different speeds, or different directions - port ahead, starboard astern, etc.), but at some point a metal band/tube was used to connect the two handles and make it look like it was one large lever.

The current control, being made in-house, has always been two separate levers, and mostly used together. It's only been in recent Capaldi episodes (late Series 9 and the Christmas Specials) where one side of the control was used. Not sure why since it's never been mentioned, but I'm sure there's some reason for it.

I hope some of this is helpful.

would using just one lever be when he does the short jumps in time? Just a thought!

Then in "Face the Raven" the levers are used separately to "steer"/"steady" the TARDIS while Clara is hanging out the door...

As for how the demat lever components were put together, here are some cool photos that I think I found on the rubbertoe Facebook page. Pretty cool  8)

It would be nice if they did explain this at some point. But then, this is 'Doctor Who' we're talking about. As soon as they explain how a control on the console works, some writer will come along, or a new Doctor, and then that explanation will go straight out the window! (But I like the speculations. They all make sense according to what we've seen on screen.)

Agreed, Kingpin. The closest I could find was this, which is a slightly more modern take on the finish, the offset on the handle, and the detail on the side of the assembly. The lever handle itself is, sadly, entirely the wrong colour and shape, but its the only place I've found all the other similarities.

So, contrary to another post, there are some of these 60's sliders on the console, panel one and two. c8611d04935c914c3a9560e1117b1c9e.jpg

So, contrary to another post, there are some of these 60's sliders on the console...

Early days for this console, those images. Its design hadn't been finalized yet. You can tell because the "collar" at the top of the panels is plain and the little white lights ring the base of the central column; the monitors are fixed in position on arms that have an upside-down "L" shape, and the "sprocket" panel (Control Panel 6 as listed) is completely unlit.

Once the console's construction was complete, there were no little lights around the base of the central column; they were in the "collar" at the top of the panels (where they still are). The monitors were placed on adjustable-height swivel mounts. And the Sprocket panel got some internal lighting added to it: first blue, and then purple which it still has.

This could explain the discontinuity in the console's appearance, with both versions appearing in "The Snowmen" and "The Bells Of Saint John" as the design was tweaked and finalized during the recording blocks.

What if the two levers were made from knife switches? They are the correct shape and pre made, so they would only need some minor cosmetic changes: new lever heads, paint etc. By the way, if anyone is building a console, they are great to use and are quite cheap to buy. Look on eBay and take a look. My image doesn't work
