Oh you glorious person, you!

You have no idea how long I searched for a photo of this Box. All the ones I found of the area had the Box Site just out of frame. Incredibly frustrating.

Actually it would best be described as --

Whitestone Pond Box - S46
Junction of North End Way, east side and Whitestone Lane, north side

Google Maps shows North End Way becoming Heath Street prematurely and Whitestone Lane no longer officially connects, but that's the Box.

I'll post street views a little later.

Well done!

POV shot in street view --

Whitestone_Pond_Box-S46-(1963)-POV_Streetview.JPG

The two buildings so prominent in the original photo are here obscured by trees. These trees are quite a bit larger than they appear due to the wide angle lenses used by Google when shooting their street view pictures.

Steet view of the Box Site (center frame) --

Note that instead of being right at the junction as described in the Met List, this Box was actually around 10 to 12 yards north of it.

OK, this is just plain nuts!

When I first came across this location a couple of weeks ago (looking for a different Box) I was certain there must be something out there due to it being an obviously popular recreation area (it's a wading and model boat pond), but even though I looked for well over an hour, all I found were views that where either in the wrong direction or just narrowly missed catching a view of the Box. Extremely frustrating.

Just now, however, I did the search again and I came up with two more shots in no time at all!

Both from between 1960 and 1965 --

In this last one you can see part of the Box on the far right with a group of Police Officers engaged in some sort of activity in front of it.

Some blowups --

And another rather obscure photo titled "Hampstead Heath North End Way looking to Esat Heath road by Whitestone Pond" (1969)

It's amazing how different the area looks now with all the trees screening the buildings and blocking the panoramic views.

Nice finally having a relatively close photo of this Box.

Here's a blowup --

And here's an extract from the only OS map available that shows this Box (from 1954-1955) --

Whitestone_Pond_Box-S46-OS_MapExtract-(1954-1955).JPG

The Box is marked "PCB" at centre of map.

Note: The original Met List indicates the Box was at the "Junction of North End Way, east side and Whitestone Lane, north side"; however, per the OS Map and the photos this box was actually about 8 yards north of Whitestone Lane, so the Met Database will be revised to reflect its actual position.
