The Box next to the Drinking Fountain in Staines Market Square - T68

Here is a relatively high res photo courtesy of PeteWilson (circa 1950) --

View of the whole Square, including the island and the Box, circa 1960s --

Please note that the description in the Met List is pretty well wrong in relation to the yardage from High Street that it gives as well as the cardinal directions given, unless it was describing an imaginary line where High Street begins and Clarence Street ends, even though they are the same street. Regardless, pretty bad.

View of the approximate Box Site (the whole Square is now paved over and closed to traffic) --

Finally, a couple of photos from 1895 showing the Drinking Fountain and its island in relation to the whole Square at the time --

More great photos - well done Pete!

Only one I've been able to find is this picture of the Fountain, which from the vintage of some of the cars appears to have been taken very shortly before the Box was sited --

Staines_High_Street-Early_30s.JPG

This is looking east on High Street, so the Square it to the right and the Box was sited right about where the sign is standing on the ground on the near right side.

It's interesting that the OS Maps somehow managed to miss the entire time the Box was sited here. The 1934-35 map is a year too early and only shows the Drinking Fountain (which, of course, also locates the Box rather nicely due its proximity), and the 1964 map shows that by that time both the Fountain and the Box had been removed. One nice thing, though, is that the 1964 map does seem to show the Resite location for the Box, it having been moved about 185 yards to the west - to a nook on the west side of Bridge Street opposite Clarence/High Street.

Here's a current street view of this Resite location --

Nice to see this at higher resolution. If you look all the way down to the end of the street, just past the edge of the building on the right is where the Box was resited to (by 1964 per the OS maps).

Here's a modest blowup of this pic for detail --

Staines_Market_Square_Box-T68-(c1950)-(H-Res)-Blowup.JPG

A Mark 3 with medium blue paint, no white on the windows, and the right (from this POV) rear window of the Box opened for ventilation.

Here are some blowups of a couple of the photos posted earlier that were a bit too small to easily see the Box:

Listed as from 1955 (though from the state of the paint I would have thought more like late 1940's to very early 1950's) --

T68 Market Square, Staines (1955)-Blowup.JPG

Some time in the 1950's --

Here is the OS map from 1934-1935 --

Staines_Market_Square_Box-T68-OS_MapExtract-Site 1-(1934-1935).JPG

It's just before the Box was sited so it isn't listed, but the Drinking Fountain is at the centre of this extract (marked "D.Fn. & G.P.") and the Box would soon be sited right next to it on the southwest side (the Market Square side of the Fountain and facing towards the Town Hall).

Here's the OS map from 1964, showing the resited Box at its new position (centre of extract marked "PCB") --

Staines_Market_Square_Box-T68-OS_MapExtract-Site 2-(1964).JPG

The Market Square is now shown at the lower right of this map, and based on all the dates for the photos the Box must have been resited (and the Drinking Fountain removed) not long before the data for this map was collected.

T68
Its the Staines Market Square Box
You can find the thread here: http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=3911.0
In instances like this, where theres a very clear indicator of the general location (so this time, the word "Staines" in the middle of the postcard) just use the search facility, and type in "Staines" and you'd have gotten a number of results.
The search option is your friend!
Keep it up, but please do use the search facility :)
