not wishing to open a can of worms but are we sure the phone door itself on the posts is cast iron, the ones on some boxes (including crich) were supplied by crittal windows which suggests they could be made from extruded steel.

It's Cast Iron, its written as the material for all the major Body parts and doors.
Very few parts are marked as Mild Steel or Aluminium, and those are usually plates.

Its not marked on the PA3, but on the back of the PA2 Posts was the Ironworks Foundry mark, everything was cast by the Carron Company in Stirlingshire. The Edinburgh Boxes, and I believe the PA1 Pillars as well all have this mark on the Base somewhere.

An example from the Post in Northwood.

Looking in a rather sad state again. :(

I've always loved the Police Post lamp. It looks so robust...

A pair of photos I stumbled across in my internet browsing:

Piccadilly_Circus.jpg
-Taken by Neil Johannessen, who had these remarks on the two Posts:
QuoteOn the left, you see the Post, as listed in early 1988. On the right, you see a newly installed replacement for that Post - the original having disappeared, in still unexplained circumstances. The replacement was an ex-City of London Post (i.e. without the embossed crown and letter detail) 'dressed' and supplied by a collector who had bought several recovered units as a job lot.

Over the years since, those applique details appear to have fallen away, and been none-too-carefully replaced, leaving the current situation looking rather strange.

Whilst going through some classic adverts on Youtube, I came across this little gem in a 1980s Chewits advert:

Whilst obviously not the real Piccadilly Circus, it's noteworthy that they either got in a prop Police Post, or somehow managed to source a real one to dress the set like the real location.
