Was just in Jo-Ann Fabrics and was in their Craft section and found a couple of wooden circles - reported to be 8" x  8" - but they turn out to be 8.5" x 8.5" when you actually measure them.
I see from the plans the Beacon is sandwiched between two 9" circular bits. I figure unless I find perfectly 9" circular bits 8.5" shouldn't look too far off.

with this collection of parts I will do a test fitting.

so I originally planned on using a plastic dome light to cap the beacon. As seen here:

but I recently came across a Lens for a Theater Par light.
IMG_1984A_zpsf9d04926.jpg
and I'm trying to decide if it looks better or not.

and I still have these for the beacon.

1/4 inch thread screw rods, bolts and a 9/32 brass tube it can fit into.
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

Your second test fit is closer to the real deal.  If you found one a little smaller it'd probably do the trick.

OK after a little more experimentation I have found an arrangement I like. (for a moment I was going to try the plastic balls in the background as domes - but I decided against it. - they are better suited for The Rani's Tardis Console or The Emperor Dalek in Evil of the Daleks. only $1 each at Party City... but I digress.)

Now I need to do some measurements and Dremel out a top and bottom sets of grooves for the Fresnel Lens to sit in the wood comfortably. Also need to cut a hole for the Bulb. And Attach the 1/4"screw rods.

*Edit- I'm reminded by rassilonsrod to always measure twice and cut once.  ;)

well I have got to find that dremel .... it appears to have gone walkabout ...

But I did find a something to make room for the Light Bulb.

Measure twice he says! Looks like you did it a few more times than twice! But it looks like it was worth it :)

more measurements - I have made a closeup of the windows of s-18 plans. Just figuring out the dimensions of the panes of glass in the windows.

checking it against the actual prop

Edit:

I have all these small sheets of frosted plastic I think will be use full for the majority of the windows of the Tardis.
7" tall x 5" wide - However they all have these two holes in the same place that have about a little over 3" between them.

I think the individual exposed window surface is approximately 3" wide - so these may just work.

Cropped around the beveled edge.

Ah right, it's the bevel. That confused me for a mo :)

warmcanofcoke

I thought you might be suggesting that the measurement shouldn't include the bevel - that the 12" across and the 15" up and Down should start inside the bevel for a moment....  ;)

Rassilons Rod

Actually, that's something I've always wondered. 12" x 15" before the wood is cut off for bevelling or after... :D

well... the angle of the bevel is 21° and the thickness of the wood is ... what?  ... about an inch maybe?  It appears to be exactly 1/2" difference - actually that could off set the width of the box by a total of 2 inches ..... Time to reexamine the plans.

I thought a friend of mine had a drill press - but it turned out I had to use my own drill instead. I placed a piece of tape on the drill bit so I knew how deep to drill.

I used a dremel to cut out a grove to rest the beacon in place.

I found a circle divided into three on the internet so I could figure out where to dill the holes for the beacon.
