My new test prints are in. I re-sized the wall paper so that the roundels are now 19.5 inches across (I'll double check just as soon as I find my ruler - seriously those thing disappear on me when I'm doing a project.) I've double checked with a ruler.  ;D

I'm trying to figure out what this wallpaper is made out of - I want to see if I can vacuumform the roundels over a positive and get a shaped piece of wall paper - Then I will attach it to some transparent plastic and make some wall segments with roundel holes.
why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

I'm afraid my attic is not the warmest place in the house to try and use a heat gun to bend plastic - and the other occupants of the house would prefer I didn't bend things in the living room and such - so I'm waiting for warmer weather. I'm still bending the plastic sheet between the two chairs as seen above. Hopefully the plastic will remember the curve.

Just got a new addition to the project.  For the Time Column I am now the proud owner of twenty five 11" clear acrylic rods. They are 1/2" thick each. The "marks" you see in the photographs are actually lint attracted to the surface of the rod by static electricity. (Hope I have enough.)

I got them off eBay from a seller called affordableplastic

Nate, I just posted an update to one of your other threads http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=3328.msg37909#msg37909, with some info on the IDM cases you were looking at.  Sorry I didn't see your thread on the subject last year.  I had some pricing info dating back to 2009 when I contacted that company.

Oh Corks!  :(

Well this is the learning curve .... the last couple of days the weather has been becoming more bearable. I thought I'd try to get back to the bending of plastic. It took me a bit before I was comfortable with a heat gun. I've started learning the technique. and then I tried to rush things .....

IMG_3448A_zps267fb351.jpg

I put too much pressure as I was bending and a split in the plastic developed.

Maybe I can salvage this plastic to make roundels or something. Always best to look o the bright side.

Let the Zigma beam experiments continue !!!

The Door Opening Mechanism - the red door control.
116Logopolis0028.jpg
I went to the craft store Michaels (http://www.michaels.com/) and purchased a couple of wooden spheres. I assume they are used to help you sew a sock closed as well as many other functions. knowing that I could always coke-it-up I purchased a few of these and drilled a whole through the ball. I do know that they do sell pre-drilled wooden spheres but they usually have a flat underside where the hole is.

I found that my first attempt to drill was a little lopsided (Glad I had two irons in the fire...) not to worry this gives me one I can experiment with before I try anything with the Good One. My second attempt was successful. The Drill hole is true (well as true as it needs to be.)

The brass tubes I used on my Police Box Beacon also work for the door control. http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=3548.60#msgx49861
IMG_3544A_zps6e0a61ed.jpg

(The brass tube with the paint on it was scratched and has a pinch in the pipe - so it is a scrap piece. ) I discovered the red spray-paint I chose from my basement had air bubbles in it and didn't spray on to the ball evenly so I used an artists brush to smooth the coat before it dried. I'll pick up some of my favorite brand of spray-paint over the week and try again before I paint the Ball that will become the door control.

Here I have spray pained the better of the two door opening mechanisms
IMG_3636A_zps469a93de.jpg
Here I am cutting the brass pipe
IMG_3641A_zps4edba089.jpg
and here I have shortened the brass pipe again.
IMG_3685A_zps7dbffc96.jpg
I have added a couple of 1/4" nuts and washers to the threaded rod.
Also here is a wooden dowel.
IMG_3686A_zps77dbb68e.jpg
Three wooden axles cut from the dowel.

removed the extra brass piece.

So I can make these gold switches  at the bottom of this screen capture as well.
124ArcofInfinity0004.jpg

Ideas for making the switches functional : I can adapt this wood axle to turn a gear that in turn turns a rheostat. Or I can add a smaller wooden knob on the other end of the threaded rod and use that to activate a rocker switch maybe.

Sorry I've been out of the game for a couple of months. I had a leg injury that just consumed my life for a little while, I'm still "enjoying" a bit of physical therapy, I need to stretch my achilles tendons some more and regain my rapidity of movement. I tried to show up from time to time but I really have been away.

The Power of Travel is beautiful Doctor, very beautiful!

so I'm getting better at this walking thing, I'm getting back into building, Work is picking up, I hope to have more updates soon.

I wish I had HALF as many rocker switches as you did!
With that many switches this will look awesome!
I am looking forward to the day this is finished

I'm using Jarrod's notes on the switches - I'm close but the last set of switches are the most expensive - unless I find a less expensive choice in rocker switch.  ;)

Switches_zps2a7ebaa5.jpg

I'm close ... * some of the colors are different than the recommended ones - but I'm hoping to find a way of shading them to the appropriate color.  ... paint might gum up the switches but there may be alternatives...

Quote from: Theta Sigma on Jan 12, 2014, 02:52 amOk, so I tweaked the drawing a bit to make it more accurate to Purple's measurements.  The result is a slightly deeper roundel than previously posted.  What do you think?

I also took some material away from the thicker parts of the underside, which should decrease the material cost of 3D printing.  This can be seen in the dimensional drawing here.

roundel_dimensions2.jpg

Here is the finished product, as close I can get it to the known measurements.

roundel3D_printing2.jpg

One question I do have is, do you all think the center of the roundel sits deeper than the outside lip that was used for mounting?  I have drawn it that way because that is the way it looks to me from Timerotor's photo here:

Here is a link to the final STL file for 3D printing:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9wuQYOPzaXcWWUySmdya29IOHM/edit?usp=sharing

I have requested a quote for 3D printing this, but I have not received it yet.  I'll be sure to post the quote once I receive it so everyone will know the approximate cost.  If anyone else considers 3D printing this, I would highly recommend that you get a quote for hi-res optical 3D printing.  The low-res filament extrusion 3D printing leaves a very rough surface that would have to be sanded smooth.

Oooooo must remember this for later.

So I had this poster squirreled away from 2005 of a Dalek signed by Billie Piper, Christopher Eccleston, and Russell T Davies.

These autographs are duplicates in my autograph collection. So I sold them and used the funds to get 25 more of the insanely expensive Switches I need for this project. Now I could have purchased a new fence for my yard, or paid off some bills, but it was an unexpected sale and there were only 64 switches left on the planet. So I figured I'm only down a poster - lets advance my Tardis Console Building project.

IMG_6753_zps4yex6cbm.jpg
IMG_6752_zpsovq9tbup.jpg

Many of the sage Tardis builders have suggested that I could have just purchased switch proxies and painted them silver. And yeah, I could have done that. But in the series there were so many close ups of these switches and I'm going to get more enjoyment out of these switches than I was out of the poster. My current total is 50 of these rocker switches and the website says the number of switches in stock is down to 39.

http://export.rsdelivers.com/product/apem/h21s12/dpst-non-illuminated-rocker-switch-16a/0334599.aspx

I purchased these switches through my friend Arpad of Pod computers. and they showed up lickety split. I am happy with the exchange of a poster I never used for these switches which I hope to build a console with one day. The switches I am missing from my collection appear on the far side of the console where there haven't been too many close ups in the show. I think proxies will be fine from now on. lol.

I have something I've always wanted, and traded something I had duplicates of. I think this was a fair exchange. It will be a while before i get back to this project. But this was a cool step forward.

There was a saying about Anime fans that I think applies to TardisBuilders: Crack is cheaper.

Awesome, and if you're happier with the switches and knowing that they're the real deal rather than a poster you never saw then it was as great trade.   I'm seriously jealous of the poster though, whoever now owns it.   :)

Wow, you really are keeping quite busy these days, Nate, working on the "Five Doctors" console as well as your Season 14 Wooden Console nightstand! I really wish I had half of the room that you do to be able to accomplish this feat. (And I agree with Glen about being jealous of the poster's new owner!)
