Wow, Jason! That looks great so far. How big is the overall console going to be? (I'm also limited with space and still trying to get dimensions for a console that will fit in the intended room. So far none of my measurements are working, and my drawings are of a console that's proportionately deformed. >:()

Maybe your console's dims will help me find a happy medium.

Mine is going to look a little deformed. The base is three feet in diameter and the top will be four and a half feet in diameter. The base is three feet tall, and the rise on the console top is 7.25 inches (standard lumber size). So the top section will be 8 inches high. I'm not 100% happy with it, but the room its going in is 10X12 (10-4.5=5.5, if it's in the dead center 5.5/2= 2.75 feet to move around it). I think it will look alright, but the purist in me is a little disappointed.

I know the feeling. The room I'm working with is about the same size, and it's the entertainment room so it's also got the TV, sofa, chairs, the computer I'm on now... :P

Thanks for the dims, though. I'll see how they work out for me.

why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.

Little by little. I made some small progress, but it was something I was nervous about. I just finished cutting the boards for the risers on the top panel. This is a hexagon in the center that sticks up so that the console panels can lean on it to get the angle. it's made of six boards that have to be cut at funny angles. The came out pretty well.

Here is a picture of them sitting on the top hexagon cut out. They are not secured to each other or the top yet, I just to took the picture like this to get an idea how they fit in the overall design. Take a look and let me know what you think!!

You are too kind. I'm hoping to have it done in time for the 50th anniversary (next November... but I'd really like to be done by Halloween)!

I made some good progress this weekend. The first thing I did was add a cutout to the center risers on the top to pass wires through. The second thing I did was cut a pass through hole in the top hexagon and a matching one in the base.

After that I glued the risers together and installed them on the top hexagon.

Then the tricky bit, the part I've been terrified of. I drew the trapezoid panel for the control panel frame. I cut it out and test fitted it and it actually fits. I may have to trim the others a little to compensate for my mediocre wood working, but the bottom line is the numbers worked out!!!!! Take a look and let me know what you think.

Only five more to cut, wish me luck!!!

Nice progress. I'm guessing you have a router to make such fine cuts. Great work.

I take it that your panels are going to be slightly recessed like those on the Junk Console? Or are you planning to mix and match the panels so some will be just flat like the Classic console, with those recessed ones being like those on the Matt Smith console: clear (maybe etched/carved?) plexi sheets with LED Christmas lights behind them? Or will they be brightly lit, diffused panels like on the 2005 console?

This one is looking great and it intrigues me more and more!

Actually the real panels will bolt over the cutout in these frame panels. That way I can take off the panels to get at the electronics, but all the panel joints can be puttied and sanded to look nice. If you look at the images of the model you can get an idea what I had in mind.

I see what you mean. I had to take a very close look at the model (I need new glasses) to see the highlights and shadows for the panels being outside the cutouts. That does make sense for easy access to the insides for repairs/upgrades.

Thank you. It was really a lazy thing. I knew that with my lilmited wood working skills I would have to fix gaps between panels, but I also knew I would need access to the electronics and the hidden screws that clamp the sections together. It's kind of a cheat, but I think when it's done it will look intentional.
