To add to your list though I tried posting Google maps links but failed miserably, sorry  :( and I don't have time tonight so I will figure out some way of giving you links to a few more locations.

To get a link out of google maps to somewhere:

  • Centre the map on the location you want.
  • Look at the top left of the map. You'll see a button that looks like linked chains. Click it.
  • In the box that comes up, right click over the highlighted web link and choose 'Copy'.
  • Switch to your open forum post that you are composing.
  • Right click and choose 'Paste'.
  • Don't click the 'Short URL' box.

CTRL-C and CTRL-V also work instead of the right click choices above.

Sorry to resurrect a dead topic, but after a quick internet search, I was able to find a colour shot of the Sheffield Box:

Any idea on the location Mark, can I re post in a sheffield facebook group photos old and new?

Mark

I think it on the car park which was to the side of "the wedding cake" registery office.

I didn't take the picture, it was Ironageman that put me onto it. Not sure where it is from.

It appears that some box replacement was done on the wicker in Sheffield the first image is from the 30's showing a bow roofed Sheffield box the second is much later 1953+ and has a pitched roof and different windows.

replaced by this one down the road

Looks like the original replacement was due to this air raid damage.

Two boxes in the last pic I think SCC used them for car parks after they were retired.

Not sure why but I missed the earlier posts

The original box near the Wicker Arches was significantly damaged by a bomb blast during WWII. I remember hearing/reading  an account mentioning a heroic police constable and the box but that's about it. If you look under the bridge next time you have chance, you can see where the bomb went straight through the bridge and it was patched up using concrete or something.

The later box near Lady's Bridge was apparently blown up due to some constable and a accident with the stove. I've heard this story a couple if times from separate people, but still can't figure how it could have happened?

The box was refurbished a number of years ago (my brother said he was involved with it) and I remember many years before that,  the whole box was removed for a period of time for a full restoration.

Not sure where this should go, if anywhere...

But I'm working in Sheffield Town Hall today and tomorrow and spotted this...

That's a shame, they've changed the lock so my key won't fit anymore :(

Here's a little lightened image of that plaque to make the wording easier for people to read what it says:

Interesting that the signage is positioned so high up. The gap underneath seems like it was made for it.....

Bob's your Uncle

It looks like an electrical wire is coming through the wall below and going up into the sign.
I'm guessing that the original sign was replaced by this bigger sign (manufactured the wrong size?), and they mounted it where it would fit.

Measure twice..and all that.
