OK, here's a snap of the 'all calls' TYJ. Notice that the first half is letraset or similar of Times New Roman, but the 2nd half is like they ran out of transfers and is hand painted.



I think this propogated from this point on - i recall the Richard E Grant press photos had a black telephone panel with the same mix of fonts but printed. (Also the lintel signs were white text on black, which I think was where the Ed Thmoas look was lifted from. Must try and locate the pictures).

A keener eye should be able to tell whether this is the mark1 or the mark 2. I don't know the specific differences, but this pic is from around 1987 I suspect - the door handles are black.
Regarding the Altered Brachaki telephone panel: this was clearly hand painted, but I approximated the following from a blow up of a photo of the panel (from Space Pirates I think):



Can someone shrink the dims of this and/or PDF it? I used this to get vinyl letters cut for the Ealing box:

I think the Hudolin panel font is Della Robia BT or very similar - the 'U' in Public is different for example.

On the subject of whether the 'all calls' panel appeared on the mk1 or mk2 TYJ, I've just found this pic. This is from Colin's costume debut press shoot, which dates it at 1984 - the panel here is the 'all calls' variety.

i can see the rear window through the gap between the door and the frame, and it looks like the sign box is slightly tilted

A few grabs of the phone panels used on the Yardley-Jones and re-dressed Newbery box. The 'all calls' panel has either been amended at some point or there were two panels in existence. Notice the difference in the word 'PUBLIC' on the middle and right phone panel. The one on the left is the original Yardley Jones phone panel.

I agree; if you look at the position of 'USE' relative to 'PUBLIC', you can clearly see they're two different signs.  Maybe they mislaid one?

Here's a version of the "Brachacki Altered" phone panel that I made for my 1/6th scale model. It's a pretty good likeness, even down to the totally asymmetrical spacing, but the font for the italicised text at the bottom isn't perfect.



And here's one of the reference images of the original that I used.

I used fonts from www.fontshop.com, and according to my notes....

"POLICE TELEPHONE" is written in 'Alternate Gothic No2 OT Std", but I squashed it slightly vertically to make it less tall.

"FREE FOR USE OF PUBLIC" and "URGENT CALLS" is in 'Alpha Bold OT Std'

"ADVICE & ASSISTANCE OBTAINABLE IMMEDIATELY" and "OFFICERS & CARS RESPOND TO" are in 'Nobel Bold'

And finally "PULL TO OPEN" is in 'Maurea Bold Italic Caps TS" (although I can't find this specific one on the site now), but that also had to be skewed around a bit to make it look more like it.

They rather helpfully have a preview function on the site where you can type what text you like in and see how it looks, so I was able to type various things off the signs and then browse through the fonts and see which mimicked it best.

I thought I'd put up the Newbery-like door sign that I used as a first version. I notice now that I used 'AND' instead of '&' in the spelling, so it's not strictly accurate, but it'll do as a placeholder until someone volunteers a better one.
