In the first post in this thread, I've now included the Mark 3 Police Box sign (and a PDF for same), and added font references for all signs.

Rassilons Rod

In the cities in the streets there's a tension you can feel,
The breaking strain is fast approaching, guns and riots.
Politicians gamble and lie to save their skins,
And the press get fed the scapegoats,
Public Enema Number One.

And now with thumbnails!

You're just kicking this baby in the butt! Nice work on that table! (And a big THANK YOU to everyone who's contributed to the sign files.

Some great work there by all concerned. Nice one.

I think the little table thing is a brilliant idea as a resource. I for one have great trouble remembering which thread I saw something and in which section of the board it lives.

I can't believe I never noticed this before, but there is third set of top signs for the Newbery prop (besides the original set and the ones made for when it doubled for the TYJ).

Logopolis1.jpg

It appears that when they redressed the Newbery to sub for the Barnet box in Logopolis (and to make it look more like the TYJ), besides raising the roof and bringing in the sides of the sign box fascias about an inch, they made signs that are much closer to a real Police Box's.

Look at the "C" in POLICE - it has slanted ends like a real Police Box (or the Brachacki box) and all the letters are more normally proportioned and uniform, rather than being extended or (in the case of PUBLIC CALL) squashed/ultra-extended with reduced stem height. They didn't bother to change the endings of the C's in PUBLIC or CALL, but still the overall effect is much different from the previous Newbery or the TYJ. Also note that the upper edge of PUBLIC and lower edge of CALL extend beyond the upper and lower edges of POLICE...BOX, not as much as on a real Police Box sign, but in direct contrast to the usual practice with TARDIS props to have everything line up on the same lines.

Looks like these signs were replaced to be more in line with the TYJ's when the box was further spruced up for its stunt double appearances in Castrovalva and Black Orchid.

Interesting.

old type 40

New member here but frequent visitor. Have drawn up and had plans to build for over 15 years...something always gets in the way. Just wanted to say that these templates and font type references for the "Police-public call- Box" plaque are VERY helpful. This was one of the few things I'd never found a more 'accurate' route to accomplishing. There are many available on market but ALL from UK sellers who ironically do NOT ship to USA. I've friends in UK & Wales and could have had 'relayed' but this just runs up the cost even more. With this new JPEG file fonts and images I should now have no problem having a sign shop do locally on 4mm so as to backlight. THANK YOU!!!!!

I'm glad they're of use.  Your sign shop should be able to work directly from the PDF, just give them overall dimensions and the height of the letters.

These more crudely hand painted signs are lovely. They were done in a hurry for location shooting... simply because all the other perspex signs - both hand cut and screen printed had damaged beyond reasonable repair, Plus they had no replacements... so This one stayed for a few stories (The Visitation location shooting) and was swapped between the TYJ and this box. - It is also visible on the TYJ in Logopolis , when it's inside the TARDIS terrorising Tegan in the cloisters.
By Black Orchid - replacement signs with the usual print had been made and fitted.
davison.jpg on this picture of Peter Davison - you can see the same sign flanking the side of the TYJ box...
;) by the time the box was displayed at Longleat 83 - it looked normal again - BUT it is interesting to see that the sign box on the side is MUCH higher that the front one! - (badly erected in a hurry probably)

I always thought that sign box height thing was due to a TYJ sign box being hung on the newbery box on the side that had no sign box.
You can tell as the newbery sign boxes have the police box style gap between the edge and the sign frame but the tyj one didn't

Yes, I think you're right, definitely looks like a sign box from the Yardley Jones.

Not to deviate from the topic, evil bob, but Crispin hasn't been with us for quite some time now. He left the Forum sometime last May, and he's still missed by many. Hopefully he'll come back one day, but for now, I don't even know if he checks in as a "guest" just to see how things are going.
