Sorry if this has already been answered but what does everybody use for the base of their consoles? Preferably something cheap.

Most of the structure of my larger console is plywood. I used ¾" for the base and ½" for the walls.
I used 3/8" plywood for the top panels and overlaid that with "bathroom panel" which is hardboard with a tough white coating on it. That surface is spray-painted. The hardboard layer is good for mounting switches, as most switches don't have a long enough screw-thread to fit through ½" plywood.

Plywood is the way to go. I use a variety of thicknesses, mostly 3/4 inch though. I use thinner ply for details and hardboard for other layers.

Thanks for your comments. Plywood seems to be the obvious option!
