Hi, I'm new to this forum but have been working on a roughly 3/4 scale console based on the one from the movie for about a year.

YAY I'M NOT ALONE!!!

Edit:
Signed up on imageshack, much better than facebook

The base, with brackets to support each panel

Four of the panels attached and a few controls added. I put the stain underneath these first so I didn't have to paint around them later

Went to the Blackpool Exhibition yesterday - one last pilgrimage before it closes for good on the 11th Nov. The replica console there was really impressive - kudos if the person who made it is on this forum! Just a shame it had the annoying 'Do Not Touch' sign.
One aspect that really inspired me was that the joins between the panels were covered with metal strips like those you edge stairs with. I was never quite happy with the rather rough joins on mine so did similar today.

Also finally fitted the conputer screen and finished the side panel that I've been meaning to do for ages

Welcome! No you're definitely not alone... :)
Smashing looking console - it's nice to see a McGann console on the way. There are a couple in the archives here, but no others ongoing that I know of.

Most of us create a photobucket account and link to the photos there so they can appear right in your postings. I haven't managed to find out what Facebook's policy is on hotlinking to photos hosted there, but normally only a photo hosting site like photobucket or imageshack will let you do that.

Yeah I've got the Regenerations book, cheers. Those plans are really good (wish they existed for all the consoles!!)

Approximate plans for some of the other consoles are on my website, here: Console Plans.

Found a double bargain in a local junk shop - a large brass barometer with a base that just might become the bottom of my time rotor - £5!  Will post pics once I get them installed.

Oh that's nice!  I've kind of been wanting to see someone do this version.

I've been seeing those half sphere light things (like in the 5th picture) everywhere now that I know people use them for their consoles.  They use them by the doors on the city busses here.

The top and sixth panel (both detachable) in place

dscf0938r.jpg
The panel and top now varnished and 'things' added. The gold frames will eventually house the destination wheels just as soon as I figure out how to build them. Suggestions very welcome!!

Finally found a base that I liked in a second hand furniture shop. May do things with it, not sure yet

The beginning of a computer pad that will fit onto the side of the console

The picture really doesn't do the lights any justice

would you happen to have a measurement for the inner hexagon? just wondering if it's in your book (which i'll have to buy!). if you happen to have it laying around i'd apperciate a look see1 thanks.

No, sadly that measurement is not recorded in the book. The inner hexagon on mine has edges of 13 cm (5 inches) and the diameter is 15 cm (6 inches) edge to edge.
However I must tell you that this is based on nothing except what looked right to me at the time!!!

The book does gives the width of the whole console as 52 inches and the base of each panel as 30 inches. Since the bottom of my panels are 14.5 inches then if you times it all by 2.143 you should be at least close!

It all depends on how accurate you want it to be. In my case it's more how I would personally have built the console for the movie than producing an exact replica.

I really am at my wit's end on how to make the dials that display the destination on my console. I want something that will spin on a pivot that's bracketed to the back of the panel and have six or eight sides about 7x3cm. I just can't work out the best way to build/source that something!

Please help!!

You can measure directly off the diagrams. There are two diagrams and in both cases the top of the hexagon works out at 22".
The side of a regular hexagon is always half its maximum width, so the top edge of the console panel should be 11".
The bottom edge is listed as 30", and the total console wdith is 60" (5 feet) on the diagrams. It looks like they hadn't quite decided how to do the extra shelf when the drawings were made, as the actual console is slightly different.
You can use the TBF console calculator to figure out other interesting numbers for the panels.
