Hi
I am wondering if anyone has the dimensions of the following:
hexagon.png
Is there any set measurements or is it just a hexagon? I am looking for 5th Doctor era console.

Hi, the shape is a regular hexagon on all screen-used consoles (up to the 9th Doctor) so you can get the angles using simple maths and only need the length along one side since all the others are the same.  I know there have been discussions and rough plans of console sizes before but can't bring the length measurement to mind.  The measurements of the 1-7th Doctor's consoles were all pretty much the same too (ie 8 feet across, panel side of XX cm, slope upward of XX degrees).

Cheers, Glen

You should also check out Scarfwearer's site at relative-dimensions.net. He's got a section on console plans for all consoles up to and including "The Five Doctors" console, with some painstakingly researched measurements as far as the panels go. As for your red highlighted "Angle B" it's 120 degrees: standard hexagon corner angle.

I would say that up to Inferno, the size of the console was slightly smaller - nearer 7 feet across.

(Just to raise that old debate again...  ;) )

Better still, just look in the [ref board=26]Console Reference[/ref] section of this site, where there are sub-boards for each of the consoles with copies of my plans, and plenty of other research material on the various consoles. The sub-board you want is [ref board=56]Season 20[/ref].

Yes, I do need to update my plans for the first console to reflect it's slightly smaller size. Sorry I haven't gotten around to this yet.

Urgh... Crispin, you do realise that if you do that, my console will be wrong.... Right? :'(

Well - I have no definite proof of this - but it does seem to be the case.

To be honest, I don't really get how it can be a whole extra foot (or even almost)... Unless the base was changed. The panels haven't changed all that much...

Yeah - I see what you mean. I guess building out a panel by three or four inches (a fair bit, I know) would extend the edge by maybe five to six inches (this is where we need Scarfwearer's calculator...) and therefore the overall diameter by ten to twelve inches.
Possible...

Isn't there a spreadsheet for this on Scarfwearer's site?

I don't think we're talking about that big a difference:

The later console diameter is 92" to my best estimate. 8' would be 96" - it's not that big.

The Hartnell console is I think a little more than 7' (84"). I'll have to go back and look at where we came out on this, but I think it was 86" or 88", a total difference of 4-6" in diameter between the Hartnell and later console and thus a build out of 2-3" on each panel. The thread is here somewhere, and I think it's high time I finished up revising my plans. Unfortunately I'm travelling with a laptop right now, so it'll have to wait.

There's a console panel angle calculator on the old site here (replacing the spreadsheet): Console Calculator, which I need to integrate into this new site. Now might be the time....

Ah - thanks for the link. I keep finding/losing it!

Yes - all you've said makes sense. Not that huge a difference after all.

I could be misattributing this information, but I believe Purple partly clarified the differences of two consoles in one of the forums and the dimensions in an email to me. I haven't searched for it here, but I will repeat.

The MkI (Brachaki) console and the MkIa console (The Claws of Axos - The Kings Demons) have the same underpinnings for the most part. In other words, the original was never chucked into the dumpster because much of it is used to make the MkIa.

MkI panels are estimated to have been 45" with the trim adding about an inch to the outer edge (92" max diameter). When the MkIa was assembled over the same but modified structure, the panels grew a little bit. The panel edges are 46" but add about an inch or so for the trim (94" max diameter).
