After a lot of umming and arring, I decided to do away with the wooden model
and remake it out of a combination of MDF and aluminium. It is so much lighter
, and a lot easier to pull apart and transport...

gearbox

This is the reduction gearbox (5:1) that I used. Because it is a worm gear,
it carries the weight and load of the column very well and is very smooth,
steady and quiet.

gearbox and pulley

This view shows the cam attached to the front of the gearbox, which is then
attached to the base of the column. It is essentially just a arm off a self
closing door. You can also see that the column is also mounted on a table-
like platform, where two small wheels are attached to each of the three legs
of this table. The top and bottom wheels on each leg interlock with a track
and give it stability from top to bottom. I used a wheel and track system
that you'd find on your everyday sliding door...

The base is going to get chucked out once I get around to building the proper
ones. These ones are off the original build that i scrapped some time ago.
