...seen in the Adipose episode.

I've had a couple of the toy pens, and the first one I had was brilliant.  Writes smooth and very nice.  Unfortunately, because of the small refill in it, it only lasted a couple weeks before running out, and no one seems to do the refills.

So, as they were on offer in Tesco, I got another one.  It was rubbish.  It was badly moulded, and the top didn't screw properly into the bottom, leaving thread showing!!  Also, the plastic inside had 'scratched' into the screw that houses the batteries, and the batteries wouldn't go into the battery housings properly.

:-/  Very disappointing.

So I swapped the refill out of the second one into the first one.

And then the ink ran out.   >:(

I cannot be bothered to buy another one just for the refill, so I'd like to build a new one, probably based on a Parker Pen or something similar, so the refills are easy to put in.

So, has anyone seen a real pen that looks like the sonic pen?  The other problem with the toy is that the silver details are painted on and rub off really easily.

I'm hoping that the real prop is a 'real pen' modified for the screen.  Anyone seen anything similar?

The crucial details are the two rings around the middle, and the silver collar at the pen end.

This is a good picture that shows the difference between the toy and the prop (the toy has an extra section for the light to come through).  I can't hotlink it, so just giving a normal link instead.

My pilot's license? That's out back in the Cessna. Or perhaps you're referring to my license to kill. Revoked. Trouble at the Kazakhstan border.

I could give you the details but then I'd have to kill you, which I can't do because my license to kill has been revoked.

No problem.  What does the inside of one of those jammies look like by the way?

This is the closest I could find with a quick search.  Bit pricey though.

It would need modifying, obviously, to get the silver end cap with the light and all that.  To be honest, I don't know the prop that well and from the images you've given us, I couldn't see much of the detail, but hopefully this link may push you in the right direction.

Thanks for the link Purple, will have a trawl through that site...

And thanks for the photo Primrodo - all the other pictures I've seen make that bit look silver.  :)

This is why it's always worth posting for input!  :D

Just a case of finding a likely looking pen.  It's either one the right shape and size without any rings at all (but quite a thick top shaft for the led gubbins) or trying to modify the toy.  I'd really love to have that metal top section because it looks so much cooler than the plastic.

Decisions, decisions!!  Any input welcome!  :D

I found these fat and somewhat inexpensive little buggers:

They may provide the base for what you are looking for.  My thinking is that they seem larger so they would be easy to retrofit, plus that endcap could be swapped out to allow for the look you are going for.

Will have a good look there Jaren, thanks.

The Sonic Pen/Screwdriver set is now on offer in Tesco at about £5.11!  Which is a pretty good deal.  Most other places have the set at £9.99.

So if anyone needs any bits for any sonic projects, this looks like a good way to get the sounds and light effects for very little money - especially considering that batteries are actually included.
