time rotor lights?

what do you guys use in your rotors?

I have a mcgannish console in mind and at first I wanted to use auto neon as I wanted a red color, but I need three long tubes (usually you get two long, two short) and I don't feel like throwing the money away on a second set..

On the other hand, I think standard fluorescent tubes would work, and I could get colored tube covers and end caps, but I'm a little nervous about wiring them up with the voltage and all.  

Anybody have any tips, tricks with this?
