Underworld Lieberman laser — or shield gun

A weapon that fires charged particles along a laser beam.
I think the trigger is in the long battery pack down the center. I remember seeing a hand always on that pack when it was fired. Even Heric pressed the shield up against his chest, I'm guessing there is a big block button with a leaf spring switch. 
The hexagon panels look like metal sheet, with sanded circles.

What type of sanded pattern do you think is on the sheald?

I made a drawing of what I think it looks like. I'll be making updates to these images once I start measuring.
