How the tardis console column go up & down

How dose a TARDIS console column go up & down?

Well I collected the lift yesterday (FRIDAY THE 13th) not a good idea.It worked fine in the workshop but when i returned it home it started to jam on the up stroke,so i rang the lads at the works and they said bring it back and they would sort it ,which i have no doubt they will ,anyhow i took some pics of it and here they are.



As you can see its a pretty rugged construction.
