I know what your going to say...  "It's a bus shelter" nar it's got a signal lamp on top and a coughtrie light on the front consistent with other boxes.

It was at the corner of Crowhurst Road and Gillsmans Hill near St Leonard's  There is a roundabout there now.

And again in colour in 1965 by then it no longer had the signal lamp. Plans for these boxes where drawn up by Sidney Little, Borough Engineer, Town Hall, Hastings. In Jan 1929.

Another one here by St Ethelburga's church in St Leonard's. You can just make out the lamp amongst the leaves

After all the talk about this being in Hastings a few years back...
I think we can safely say now that this type of box is definitely NOT anywhere near Hastings.....and is somewhere around London! ::)

Do you know what I think you are absolutely right!  :)
Ok you can't see the high railed fence from that distance in the three P35 photos but I'm sure that is the railway bridge/line in the background of the "Bench" Photo and the land behind them is British Rail where they stored all the crap and also the billboards used to be in positions like that!
BUT the only thing against is there is no ARW Siren at this box (whilst there looks like one in the Bench Photo)  ???

Its definitely a contender for sure. An the general topology does look tantalisingly good.
What would clinch it would be a post war aerial photo that shows the park rather than the allotments that preceded it.
Great spot James.

I find this box rather charming and very fitting for the English seaside.

It also turns out Hastings had a second type of box. Not a met box but a 70s update of the 1929 brick box. I see from the Hastings Tardis thread linked to further up this thread that there appeared to be boxes on the OS map with long footprints and smaller square footprints. I think this later box must explain those square boxes.

Clearly this box takes its inspiration from the early box with the central door and long windows either side.

Hmm, that is an unusual design. Definitely got that 70's feeling (though I suspect the colour ones may be 80's due to the grey and red?). Not quite ugly, but lacking in beauty - It's got that 'municipal blandness' that seemed to creep in around that time. With all that clear glass it looks like a small, depressing train-station waiting-room (remember those?) for one.
A mixed-up non-conformist, trying to fit in.
