A few weeks back, I spotted that ThisPlanetEarth had started making TARDIS Elements, specifically "Pull To Open" themed key safes, and "Police Box front" doorways. As soon as I saw the key safe, I knew I needed one. Then I saw the price (about £300, which seems to be introductory). Now, I'm not going to slag TPE off for the cost because I'm sure they can justify it, but I've decided to build my own.

I have the measurements, so now I just need a trip to B&Q for almost everything else.

I've already started getting the basics together...a reasonably close handle, and a stencil for the lettering

I chose the 7th Doctor TYJ version because that's what the sign looked like when I was first watching the show as a kid.

More soon!

UPDATE: 19th April 2020
Not much of an update (due to COVID19) however, I've now cut the wood for the sign frame, and just need to sand the edges to make them smooth, and ever so slightly rounded to remove sharp edges and maintain authenticity.

Once I've cut the wood for the sign surface (upon which I will use the stencil to get the lettering painted on), it'll then be a case of securing the sign surface within the frame. My wife has suggesting cutting a groove within the frame, which seems the best option given that I don't want nails visible on the outside of the frame, nor do I want to rely on wood glue, as I want this construct to be sturdy.

After that, it's then getting hold of the paint, which, again due to COVID19, is a little tricky because I really need to eye-ball the paint available; something I can't do until I can actually go into the store.

In terms of paint colour(s), I intend to use 3 colours (or close approximations of):
Base Colour - #375974
Additional - #234865
Black - #000000

The base colour will be all over, whilst the Additional and Black will be roughly applied (barely visible) with a dry brush. This is to give the colour more texture and dirt. The dry brushed Black will be the last thing to go on so that some of the white lettering is becomes dirtied.

At the moment, I'm concentrating on the sign replica aspect; the keysafe (the box behind the sign replica) will come later.

If anyone has suggestions or alternatives for anything I've said here, please feel free.

The keysafe is finally complete

I know the colour is off a bit, and the text takes up a bit more space than it should but I'll fix that on the 2nd go :)
