Umm, Pi?  The one that starts 3.14159... ? and is derived from dividing 22 by 7 and is referenced (confusingly and confusedly) in The 5 Doctors?

Sadly, those starting digits are something that I can always remember (along with Social security numbers, bank accounts, library card barcodes etc), and once upon a time ("inspired" by Twin dilemma) I even spent a few weeks in math classes idly working out the square root of -3 (not =1.7320508076...)

Sadly yours, Glen    ;)

slighty typo, I meant 5 not 7...

I always remember 3.142 also, bu I'm sure I heard at some point that the 4 is rounded from a 5... hmmm... oh well - I don't use it that often. And when I do, I just use 22/7 :)

Equally sadly - I can confirm from memory that you're correct! - about pi, I mean, rather than your telephone number!

Umm... it isn't derived from dividing 22 by 7 at all. It's the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. 22/7 is a rough approximation accurate to two decimal figures (pi itself is an irrational number, which means it can't be shown as a simple fraction).

Not as such. Pi is pi is pi, and the definition of pi has been constant for around 4,000 years; what has changed a great deal has been the accuracy with which we've known the digits of pi. However, we've known the value of pi accurately to over 500 places since the late 19th century. Obviously in the modern age of digital computing things have become a little silly and we've been able to calculate to beyond the 1,000,000,000,000,000th digit of pi. Just to put that into perspective, if you were to calculate the circumference of the Earth from a precisely known diameter using pi to a quadrillion digits, you'd be accurate to within 40nm - which is less than a thousandth the width of a human hair.

Doctor: Surely you know some basic mathematics, child?

Tegan: Of course... the ratio... of the circumference of a circle... to its diameter....is represented by the greek letter pi,right?

Doctor: Right! We find the safe path across by using the mathematical formula pi!  Oh, but the application, the application... let me see now... 3.14159265... yes!  That's it! You stay there child....(*scoots across the chessboard*)... NOW!!

Tegan: I hope you've got your sums right!!

Chessboard: ZAP!!!!!

Doctor: Apparently not. Oops, well, never mind. (*carries on alone....*)

Funny that, I noticed at the end of Arc of Infinity (Where DID Omega get that TARDIS from? Perhaps Hedin sent it to him...) that The Doctor looks less than thrilled to have her back in the TARDIS crew :)

The Master, The Monk, The Rani, Drax, Salyavin, Omega.. Anyone would think that TARDISes were being given away with breakfast cereals!

here are the angles for a dodecagon

why doesn't the Guide mention them? - Oh, it's not very accurate.
Oh? - I'm researching the new edition.
