That's awesome. I wish I could pull off any of the Doctors but I'm big and tall... Well tall and fat would be a better description of it lol.

... I had a ball doling out jelly babies (actually gummy bears dusted in powdered sugar as they are not readily available around here...

Funny you should mention that.  I did splurge once and buy Jelly Babies online.  But that's a pain in the butt.  And truth be told, I don't like authentic English Jelly Babies that much.  (I want to say Jelly Babies were briefly available in the US in the late 1980s, but they were the Australian version or something, so they didn't have the powder and gritty taste.  They were basically Gummi Bears in Jelly Baby molds, but I digress.)  So I either do Gummi Bears or Sour Patch Kids.  And my "fig leaf" justifying it is how Tom Baker often had licorice Allsorts but called them "Jelly Babies."  The most visible time is in "The Pirate Planet," when he throws a bag to leave a trail of candy and it is clearly not Jelly Babies.

Yeah. That Really annoyed me at the time. I mean.. In the UK it's not hard to get jelly babies so why use all sorts then call them jelly babies?
It's that kind of slap dash approach that got the show cancelled in the end!!

That kind of stuff doesn't bother me so much nowadays, although it does still niggle a bit...

I only wish I could get Jelly Babies that aren't made of gelatine :(

I just had a quick look online and I think you are right.. They don't do them.. Have we discovered a gap in the market?!

Unfortunately, I don't know of Jelly Babies without gelatin, however I do know of several places in the US to get Jelly Babies. Mostly local however. But in Florida, they carried them in Publix, Taverners brand. There was a local shop in Philadelphia that also carried Gustov's, and both of these were great. I believe the German Village in Lancaster PA also has Gustov's. There is a candy shop in King of Prussia called Lolli and Pops which also had the Taverner's brand, actually. So I would check into some specialist candy shops, or even the candy section of your local grocery stores. I know Wegman's used to carry them in my neck of the woods, but no longer. Taverner's once again. But who knows about elsewhere. Otherwise I used to buy them from a a candy shop in the UK that would ship here, they sold Parr's. Thankfully the German Village has my back now.

I'm partial to Parr's first and foremost, they are most like the ones used in the show, and I never, never cared for Bassett's, neither the taste or shape. Awful. Gustov's, Parr's and Taverner's all seem to look like the ones used in the show anyway, same color and shape, although Gustov's sometimes come without the confectionary sugar.

As for gelatin free, maybe they are out there? Or hopefully they will be one day.

I have had the "real deal" once when several online acquaintances met at Dragon*Con (an Atlanta based genre convention...and now pretty much "Comic Con" for the South as it's gotten so huge).  They were the Bassett's brand which I enjoyed well enough.  I haven't had any other brands with which I could compare.  The texture reminded me of the "orange slices" my late grandmother would get.  (Orange splices were usually covered in sugar crystals, not powdered sugar.)    Remembering the candies were "dusted'.  I bought a small box of powdered sugar to "dust" the Gummi bears, not that the majority at that luncheon would have known about that detail.  Of course, it had the side benefit of keeping the bears from clumping.

True, I could have ordered some online, say, through Who North America, but it was pretty much a last moment addition and considerably less expensive.

We have an extra large Publix in my town, but I don't recall seeing genuine Jelly Babies in there.  If I had (depending upon the price), I would have opted for those.  Then again, the bulk of my ensemble (the trousers, shirt, sweater vest and jacket) were more "in the spirit" than "screen accurate", so "faux" jelly babies were good enough.  Here's a photo a co-worker snapped.  Please forgive the circle obscuring my face.

I remember reading somewhere (can't remember where) that Tom dis-liked jelly babies, which is why he went to the licorice Allsorts.

We noticed that in "The Pirate Planet," when he throws the bag to leave a trail of candy, it is clearly not Jelly Babies, as well.

We have had a few of the Taverners and Bassett's brand jelly babies. Got them at "Cheap as Chips" here in South Australia, we often get British & American products there, but the prices are not in line with the conversion rate of the sale prices, sometimes 1.5 - 3 times what they should be. Nice products though & better than Australian made.

I think they're tastier than the proper ones.

Was it The Pirate Planet where he had Liquorice Allsorts?

Apologies to our English posters, but I think of Jelly Babies and tanks in the same category:
The English invented them, but the Germans really figured out how to make them.

For a very brief window in the late 1980s you could get Jelly Babies in...Walgreen's(?) drug stores in Wisconsin.  I feel like they were the Bassett's brand--I remember them coming in a yellow box with the Babies doing a kind of chorus line on the front of the box.  But they did not have the cornstarch coating.  They were the same as Gummi Bears.

So when I bought some from an online store that sells English stuff, I was surprised when they showed up and were all powdery and the texture was different.  I wonder if Bassett's licensed out the brand for US production for a bit?

Wife wanted to go to the shops yesterday, Went to "Cheap as Chips" & what did we find? "Maynards Bassetts Jelly Babies". They were $6.50 Aus for the 400g box, not to bad a price. Opened them when we got home to try them, not like gummy bears thankfully, I can't chew them anymore, a little bit of flavour but not a lot, could do with some more, a lot more.
Here are some pictures.

Couldn't resist & she had a laugh as well & took one.
She then imitated Paul McGann when he offered the police officer one & went yum yum yum.
