Having been very impressed with Lym and Anson's Met Box creations I thought I'd make a start.

Its taken me some time to find an app that works for me. I'd like to use Blender but struggle with it so have started with Sketchup
using plans I was given, in 1979, by a BBC employee who worked at TV Centre, Wood Lane.

The Fresnel lamp will be the hardest item I think.

Haven't found a good renderer yet ( I'm trying Twilight but not working too well yet ).

So this is as far as I've got...

Sketchup is one of about 2 programs I've never gotten the hang of (the other is Access).  Very impressive.

Been experimenting with the Fresnel Lamp plus using Sketchup's own renderer which is a bit basic.

If I use a darker blue for the box all the detail disappears into the shadows.

Been trying Keyshot Render...

Met Box on Mars:

Still got more work to do on windows.

Yet to do Phone Door, handle, hinges and lock.

No ramps yet on stacks or panels.

Volpone

You figured out the transparency/reflection paradox?

Loving that Mars render, extremely atmospheric, especially with that spot of burning light picked up in the fresnel.  I presume you'll be installing a bulb in it at some point?

In regards to the paintwork, it might be worth trying to add a little distortion to the texture? Something that breaks up the perfect mirror finish, and makes it look a bit uneven, like you'd get with something that was painted by a bunch of workmen over a couple of hours. :)

Figured out the Fresnel render but St John transparency works fine in Sketchup but can only set single colour in KeyShot 8.

I have installed a bulb but
haven't found the right bunch of workmen yet.

It is literally hard for me to believe what we can do with computers these days.  I was in high school when we got our first green-screen Apple]['s. They had 64K of RAM, no hard drive, and a pair of drives for 256K 5.25" floppy disks.  You could write a program on them that would ask you your name and it would greet you by name.

And now there's this.
"My dear Litefoot, I've got a lantern and a pair of waders, and possibly the most fearsome piece of hand artillery in all England. What could possibly go wrong?"
-The Doctor.

My first encounter with real computing was using a Teletype ASR 33 with paper tape and an acoustic coupler at High School in Camden Town, London. The "Time Sharing" DEC Main Frame was in Great Portland Street, London that I'd got to at the weekends. We used BASIC. Now use a ThinkPad Hackintosh to do my 3D Met Boxes.

Just added Starcross' Police Sign.

Sign not cleaned up yet. Added 1/4" glass to the left hand side but needs to be pushed in slightly further:
