Time Rotor Mechanism

Hi All

Got a full sized console in the works.. Wondering how anybody has tackled the time rotor mechanism? Designs are all under wraps at the moment but I'm going for the classic era outline. I've got no idea how much the central column itself will weigh, but it should hopefull be fairly lightweight as it'll be a mostly plywood structure as opposed to the large perspex cylinder of the screen-used consoles.

I think I've got a good idea of the mechanism I need to put together, but my main issue is actually finding a suitable motor/speed controller situation that won't break the bank! It's tricky to find the right motor when I've got no idea how much the finished time rotor will weigh, so if anyone who's made their own motorised time rotor could point me in the right direction then that would be great!

P.S

This full sized console will be my final major project for University. As well as the physical project, I need a great deal of research to go alongside! If anyone has any solid info on how the time rotors worked for the various on-screen projects then that would be really helpful. I've found a few discussions but most of them seem to be speculation rather than solid info!
