The Tenth Planet

This picture's been doing the rounds for a while and has been identified as coming from The Tenth Planet.

There was some discussion before about the crooked silhouette visible through the top two roundels of the doors in both this story and The Smugglers. Looking at this, I'd say it's pretty conclusive that it's the top of the zig-zag awning, broken and hanging down.

What a great photo! The layout certainly matches the studio floor plans (though it now seems doubtful they used the spare Police Box doors outside, unless this was taken before they were put in place).

Thanks for posting 😊😊

Sorry if I'm being obtuse.... Where are we looking?

Thanks! Glad you like the picture.

No, you're not being obtuse at all. It's a while since we had the discussion about the mystery silhouette visible through the top two door roundels. I'm guessing that was obliterated after the TB site got nuked last year.

"Zig-zag awning" is my slightly throwaway term for the frame around the original TARDIS interior doors. Shown here from the outside in Colony In Space, which demonstrates how it gave a false illusion of depth to the wall when viewed from inside the set. The Tenth Planet photo has the side of this structure visible through the replacement roundel backings, which must've been a good deal less opaque than the original moulded plastic ones. The crooked shadow at the top of the doors is almost certainly the top of this frame, snapped in half and hanging down.

Apologies if you already got it and I'm over-explaining (Fansplaining?). I thought it might be worth putting this up for reference anyway.

No, I'm glad you have explained. I thought you might mean that, but when I first read it all I could think about was the hexagonal "ceiling unit" :D

It's the angle of the light and the doors not being in the fully closed position.

The light is up high pointing down and off to the side. This is causing the back of the door frame, which extends a bit past the back of the doors and roundel field, to cast a shadow on the doors and the roundels to the left of the doors. The left door is slightly open causing the frame's shadow to fall at a steeper angel then the shadow on the right door.

Oh true! The shadow is coming from the front, you can see it spilling down the inside wall of the roundel. :)

You mean the lintel wasn’t broken? Hmmm. Maybe. Even with the doors slightly open, the angles of the silhouettes look too steep to me. I wonder why this only seems to be an issue in two consecutive stories.

Also, there’s an extra something silhouetted at the top of the awning’s side, which might suggest structural issues at this point.

Then again, if I’m right, why didn’t they just fix it? Or adjust the light?

If the lintel isn't broken, I suspect it's just the XZ position of the set in relation to the lights.... They were set quite high up anyway, so a steep shadow isn't unlikely. Just depends exactly where the set was put up, I think..... Or that would be my best guess anyway :)

If you are right: Quite a few things got left in in those days, because they were working 42 weeks of the year and they just didn't have the time.
