The Kenneth Sharp Tardis Console

Exemplary work. I'm very sorry this isn't getting released as originally intended, but I'm delighted that you've shared it with us here.

I strongly suspect the people who would most benefit from and most appropriately appreciate the amount of work that has gone into this are located right on this board anyway.

Work like this that is so thoroughly researched and so well presented makes me want to build a console even though I previously had absolutely no interest in building a console. Its value to this community is absolute, no matter what publication has been fool enough to pass on it.*

*I also call bullsht on the decision.  In 2019 dimensions are fixable with a mouse-click.  Feels like there must be more to that story, but whatever it is isn't going to be as interesting as the plans themselves, so screw 'em.

That's a real shame Tony, you must be very disappointed. To be honest, your wonderful plans were the only reason I was going to buy the annual. Many thanks for sharing them with us at TB....

Thank you Mike - that is greatly appreciated.

A word of caution though, you might want to tot up how much you've spent on your TY-J Box before you commit to any console building!  ;)

Well, I've simply accurately repeated what I was told regarding the formatting issues which have prevented the article's intended publication. And, in fairness, they are still using my artwork to illustrate various stories
(see http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=8756.msg110307#msg110307 ).

From a purely personal and possessive point-of-view, I just hope that parts of my illustrations haven't been similarly concealed by the book's spine or cut-off at the top or bottom. I'll have to wait and see   :-\ .....

Thanks also to other people who have commented on this topic. It really is very nice of you all. Now, all of you, don't just sit there reading this, go out, buy some timber and get building your very own Kenneth Sharp Console!  ;D

The running total thus far would be entirely indefensible if not for the fact that I clearly have mental problems sufficient to be beyond reproach. :)

Oh man, this is such dismal and baffling news. These things are an easy fix nowadays and presumably there'll be a big hole in the production now. What's going to replace those missing pages?

The last I heard Meantimebob, the answer to your question was nothing; the annual's page count was to be reduced by 21 (but even then, it will still be approximately twice the number of pages as the Dr Who annuals it is intended as an 'homage' to).

Tony, as others have stated, really sad to hear that your beautiful plans will not be published, or at least, not yet. Along with others, I'm really happy that you have decided to share your article with us. It's been a joy to read!

Sorry if I am disturbing an older thread, I was wondering if there were any larger resolution images of the above plans? I noticed the Panel 1 had a large image on the second to last page.

Apologies for the delay in replying. I am hoping - with thanks to Brian Terranova (Terrasolo here on Tardis Builders) - that the full set of plans will be available as a down-loadable PDF in the very near future.

Myself, Dan Liwszyc, Slava (DW_1200), Steve (Fivefingeredstyre) and Karst (Karstenhotep) have all been working hard to prepare the "e-book" ready for your enjoyment and edification!

(I'm just waiting on a couple of bits but - if all goes well - the PDF should be ready by the end of August.)  :)

What did you use for the silver toggle switches, as in, are they two position or three (maybe "on-off-on")?  They are hard to see in most of the TV images, but I am sure some at least appear to be vertical, rather than in a toggled up or down position, which would suggest they are 3-position - possibly only momentary in the "on" position, so the rest state is the vertical "off" position.

If you watch such stories as Colony in Space and Planet of the Daleks, I think that the majority of the toggle switches are two-way switches - if you listen when the Doctor is operating the Tardis - particularly in Colony - there is a distinct single click as each toggle switch is 'thrown' - if they were three-way switches, you'd expect to hear a double-click. Of course the single click could be that the switches 'resting' position is in the middle and that the single click is simply because both the Doctor and Jo (in Planet) simply move the switches to their 'down' positions.

I don't think that the visual evidence is strong enough to reach a definitive conclusion....

I've not really been of much help here, have I?!

T

Yeah, I had originally thought they were just two position switches, but then this picture had me wondering if those two switches there were actually positioned vertically... but now that I look at it again, it is a bit hard to be sure.  I think I'll just go with the two way switches (probably what is referred to as "12V Heavy Duty Toggle Flick Switch" on eBay).

Hi Krynoid,

Don't forget that the metal panel you're showing here was only added for the console's final appearance in the Pertwee era. The two toggle switches on this panel are different to the ones used on all the other panels; the 'stems' on the two toggle switches you've shown us here were nearly twice the length of those used elsewhere (the shorter ones being approx 1/2" in length).

Are you actually planning to build a Pertwee Console?

T

Yes, good point about that panel being a later addition, and indeed those switches look different to the others.  I had meant to ask how high the stems/levers are on the switches you used, so thanks for mentioning that - I had thought they might be a bit longer than 1/2".  I think the switches I am looking at on eBay are longer, but I'm not going to stress too much about that.

I am building a Pertwee console, based extensively on your research, of which I am extremely grateful for.  You have done such an incredible job, and I am not sure I would have embarked on this project if it weren't for your work!  Mine is constructed a bit differently (to make it more modular), and I am severely "woodwork challenged", with no prior woodworking experience & only very basic tools, so it really is a significant challenge for me.  I am expecting to have to make a lot of compromises, particularly when it comes to the controls (difficult to find some items without spending a lot of money), but my take on this is that I can replace substitute items for more accurate ones over time as I find them.  I am currently part way through, with the hope that I can have enough completed such that I can display it at a local convention next month!  I decided not to do a build diary in here until I am at least at a stage where I am fairly confident that it will all go together.  I'll probably wait, though, & do more of a retrospective post about it, maybe after the convention.
