TARDIS sides

Okay, this is a fairly odd question:

While discussing my TARDIS build (still in the planning stages), my brother asked me if I could use something like chair rail or baseboards mounted on the sides to create the depressed rectangles.  Basically, if I could cover the entire side with chair rail or something similar, and leave just the rectangles uncovered.

I looked around on the Lowes website, and I didn't see any type of chair rails or baseboards that would be in roughly the right shape.  Has anyone else used a method like this on their TARDIS?
Or is this an idea that wouldn't really work out?

I'm building a mashup TARDIS- a little bit of the 2005, a little of the 2010, and a little of the Brachaki TARDIS, if that would make any difference.

Well the general idea is workable -- building up on top of a back-plane, so the recessed squares are left to show through the gaps in the front cladding.  It's how many boxes are made.  I don't know that there's anything off-the-shelf that'd do the trick, though, especially if you wanted correctly beveled edges.

I'm not concerned with complete accuracy at this point- I plan on continuous improvement after it's finished.  I think that my brother was just trying to speed construction along, as I roped him into helping me  ;D.

If you're throwing in some Brachacki features, the original (Hartnell) box didn't have any bevels on its stiles. In that case using plain 1 x 4 planks would work, and they would be about the right dimensions.

I'd been planning to use solid posts for the posts, but maybe I'll use 1x4 planks instead... I want to be able to take my TARDIS to different locations (my local library is planning a Doctor Who event in the fall), and I was not looking forward to lugging solid wood posts 100' to the meeting room.

I do not know if it is available where you are but there used to be a molding called cant edge mopboard which would be just about right for the door stiles. It would be a little thinner (profile depth) but have the same shape as needed.
